H. SGHINDLER.
BUST SUPPORT.
Patented Aug. 29, 1893 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO SOHINDLER, OF MARIA-SOHEIN, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY.
BUST-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,054, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed fieptember 12, 1892. Serial No. 445,684. (No model.) Patented in Germany September 3, 1891, No. 62,641.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO SCHINDLER, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaHungary, residing at Maria-Schein, (near 'Ieplitz,) Bohemia, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have -invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Supports, (for which I have obtained patent in Germany, No. 62,641, dated September 3, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a breast support intended for use as a substitute for corsets and adapted to improve the shape of the feminine bust by raising the breasts and counteracting their tendency to drop and supporting them in a practically horizontal position without interfering with the circulation of the blood or causing the liver to be crippled or other parts of the body injured as most corsets at present are liable to do; the improved breast support also afiording perfect liberty of motion to every part of the body of the wearer.
The accompanying drawings illustrate this improved breast support, Figure 1 being a front'view and Fig. 2 a back elevation thereof.
It mainly consists of two caps act of strong material, made to conform to the shape of the breasts and attached by their lower edges to a belt 1) (Figs. 1 and 2). The belt consists of two parts which on each side of the body are united by means of buttons, hooks and eyes, or other fasteners e. In its central portion in front an elastic (preferably india rubber) piece e is inserted so that the belt can yield to the alternate expansion and contrac tion of the waist produced by breathing. By means of a buckle d the length of the belt may be adjusted to fit the waist. Bands f are provided on each side of the belt, their opposite ends being connected by means of a shackle h with other wider bands is embracing the shoulders, buckles g enabling the length of these shoulder bands to be adjusted at will. The shoulder bands 10 pass beneath the horizontal portion of the shackle h, whereby these bands are enabled to yield to any strain resulting from an irregular motion of the shoulders and accommodate any deflection of the same from their normal position on the same level, the pressure of the bands 70 on each shoulder remaining the same whatever its position for the time being. From shackles an attached to the shoulder straps is additional straps L lead to the breast capsa a.
When it is desired to use this form of improved breast support, the buttons or hooks on both sides of the belt (at e) are unfastened so that the wearer may get in by passing her head between the shoulder straps k. The breasts are then introduced into the caps and the belt fastened on both sides.
To protect the hips from injury from the pressure of the tapes or strings of the skirts, I employ a special hip-protector, the same consisting of the vertically-arranged bands 8, which at their upper ends are secured to the belt 17, and the band I to which the lower ends of the bands s, are secured, said bands I) and 8, being adapted to encircle the body of the person about the hips and waist. If desired, the band 19' may have an elastic piece 8' inserted, capable of yielding to the movements produced byrespiration or otherwise.
I claim- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support adapted to encompass and hold the breasts, and an adj ustable belt secured to the lower portion of the support, of a hip-protecting device comprising the vertically-arrangedbands 8, secured at their upper edges to the said adjustable belt and a band b secured to the lower edge of the band 8, said bands 12', 8, being adapted to encircle the body of the person prising the vertically-arranged bands 3, se
secured to the lower portion of said supports, said belt being made in sections and adjustably connected together, straps f, secured at one end to the supports a,a ,buckles g, interposed in said straps to render them adjustable, a shackle h, to which the other ends of the straps f, are secured, shoulder straps 7c, secured at one end to shackles m, and passing through the shackle h, straps L secured to the front of the supports and in the center thereof and to the said supports at the sides of the latter, and being also connected with the shackles m, as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination with the supports a, a, adapted to support the breasts, of a belt I), secured to the lower portion of said supports, said belt being made in sections and adjustably secured together, straps f, secured at one end to the supports a, a, buckles g, interposed in said straps to render them adsoaos L justable, a shackle h to which the other ends of the straps f, are secured, shoulder straps 7c secured at one end to shackles m, and pass ing through the shackle 72', straps L secured to the front of the supports at the center thereof and to the said supports at the sides of the latter, and being also connected with the shackles m, and a hip-protecting device consisting of the bands .9, secured at the upper edge to the belt b, and an adjustable band 12' secured to the lower edges of the bands 8, said band encircling the body of the wearer, and an elastic piece .9 interposed in the band I), for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO SCHINDLER.
