Application led October 29, 1915. Serial No. 58,597.
To all 'whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, IVY D. Hownnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballston Spa, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others sllled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to Acorsets and the primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for corsets, which is particularly designed for use by stout women, for supporting their abdomen, and which is constructed so that it will gradually reduce the size of the abdomen.
Another object of this invention is to provide an absorbent shield for use in connection with the abdomen supporting structure which is to be positioned between the legs of the wearer and assist in supporting` the abdomen as well as absorbing perspiration or other moisture cast off by the wearer, and further to provide a shield as specified which may be easily removed and a dry one attached in lieu of the same, thereby eliminating all discomfort such as the torture of scalding in summer and chaiing in winter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a back shield which is reinforced by stays and is constructed so thatJ it will prevent the clothing from catching between the hips of the wearer when arising from a sitting position, or upon stooping or bending, and to attach an elastic tape to the back shield which is provided for extending about the waist of the wearer.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a corset constructionlas specied which includes all of the various parts, namely the abdomen engaging and support ing members, theleg pad or shield and the back shield which parts are connected so that they may be-easily and quickly disconnected or removed when desired and further to provide a strap which extends through the leg shield and which may be attached to the abdomen engaging and supporting member if it is so desired, eliminating the use of the leg shield. v
With the foregoing and other objects in View this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of an ordinary corset .showing the improved attachment, attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the corset showing the invention attached and showilng the side opposite to that illustrated in iig. l;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the back pad; 'F.Fig. t is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. l;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7--7 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of an ordinary corset, which is slightly altered to accommodate the attachment thereto of the abdomen supporter and esh reducer of this invention.
The corset 1 is provided with a plurality of eyelets 3 through which the laces 4 are inserted which laces attach the abdomen supporting members 5 and 6 to the body of the corset.
The abdomen supporting members 5 and 6, are constructed of soft cloth and have their edges bound as is shown at 7. Each of the members 5 and 6 have upwardly extending projections 8 and 9 formed thereon to which the straps 10 and 11 respectively are attached. The straps 10 and 11 are provided with a plurality of eyes 12 and have rings 13 attached to their free ends. The straps 10 and 11 extend upwardly from the projections S and 9 and through slits 14- formed in the corset 1, which positions the upper free ends of the straps on the outer surface of the corset body. Hooks 15 are attaclied to the outer surface of the corset nal support, the back pad an`d leg straps body above the slits 1d and are provided which connectthe back pad to the lower for extending through the eyelets 12, for edge of the abdominal support, will prevent holding the straps, and consequently the upward creeping movement of the support abdomen supporting members 5 and 6 in and hold it in its proper position.
various adjusted positions. rIhe corset or garment is rst applied like The abdomen supporting member 5 is an ordinary corset, and fastened about V*connected to the member 6 by ordinary hook the wearer, after which the straps'll are 4and eye connections 1S and 19. A protect- Madjusted for adjusting the position `of. the ing flap 20 is attached to the member 6 and members 5 and 6 to properly support the extends beneath the eyes 19 for preventing abdomen of the wearer. After the abdomithe hooks 18 and eyes 19 from irritating nal support has been properly adjusted, the the wearer of the device. j leg pad 23 is passed between the legs of Y Each of the members 5 andV 6 has an eye the wearer, and the back pad 26 is properly or analogous fastenirag` device 21 attached positioned, after which the belt 36, which is to its outer surface adjacent its lower inner corner, which is adapted for connection with a hook or fastening means 22. rIlie fastening means 22 is attached to the leg pad 23. The leg pad 23 is preferably formed of soft cloth which has absorbent properties and is substantially circular shaped in plan, but any shape desired may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invenvention. A strap receiving pocket 2li is formed upon the upper side of the leg pad and extends longitudinally along the center of the same; |Ihe strap 25 is attached to one end of the hip pad 26, and is covered with constructed of the elastic members 37 and 88, is properly adjusted and fastened about the waist of the wearer which holds the back pad 26 in its proper position and coacts with the back pad andthe leg pad' in preventing the abdominalV supporting-V members from creeping upwardly.
Vhat is claimed is 1. In a corset structure,V the combination with a corset, of a pair of abdominal engaging and: supporting members detachably carried by the corset, means attached tothe upper ends of said abdominal supporting members for adjustably connecting them rubber sheeting as is indicated at 26.
