I. M. FERRIS'. ABDOMINAL SUBPORTER.
No. 407,341. Patented July 23, 1889.
INVENTOH:
nwm E. 0 N w W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA M. FERRIS, OF OSAGE CITY, KANSAS.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,341, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed August 22, 1888. Serial No. 283,488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDA M. FERRIs, of Osage City, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Abdominal and BreastBandage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to reduce the size of the abdomen and uterus after confinement, and also to relieve the breast of lacteal fluid and absorb the fluid as it flows from the nipple; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, of the inner side of the part that covers the abdomen, the flap thereof being shown in an elevated position.
The construction for the breast consists in a wide belt-bandage formed in two parts A A, which are united at the back by a series of straps and buckles a. a and at the front by straps and buckles b b. Each part A A is provided with a shoulder-strap B, and eachis also provided on the front side with an elliptical rubber strip 0, having an opening 0 for the nipple.
D is a circular piece or cover for the rubber strip 0. This cover is secured to the outer side of the breast-bandage by a semicircular line of stitching C the other half of the cover, which is free, being provided with a button-hole for engaging a button 0 cover is composed of two pieces, which are united by stitches O W'hen the cover is pressed outward, it is concavo-co'nvex; but it may be folded and lie flat, as shown in the left-hand cover, Fig. 1. The upper half of the right-hand cover in said figure is cut away, disclosing the rubber nipple-strip and a liquid-absorbing material C on theinner side of the cover.
E E are straps and buckles for uniting the breast and abdominal parts, the inner side of each of said straps being provided with a keeper 6 for the reception of the belt F.
The abdominal part proper or pad H is preferably of rubber cloth with an edge bind- The ing h. This rubber is re-enforced on both sides by radial or star pieces h 71 H is a flap secured at its upper edge to the inner upper side of the pad H. This flap is partly broken away in Fig. 2.
I is a back rectangular rubber-faced pad having an inner cloth lining I. There are four rubber faced and lined hip-pads J J tWo on each side. The pads J J are connected, respectively, by elastic bands J The two forward pads J are connected by straps and buckles K to the respective sides of the abdominal pad H, and the two rear pads J are connected by straps and buckles L to the respective sides of the back pad I.
One end of a napkin M is suitably secured to the under side of the back pad I, the forward part of said napkin being provided with a strap m for engaging a buckle m on the under side of the front pad H. The napkin is supported on each side by a double united strap N. The upper end of each strap N is secured by buckle n to one of the hip-pads aforesaid. There are two short straps N, the lower end of each being fixed, respectively, to one of the straps N. The upper end of each strap N is secured by buckle N to the under side of the front pad H.
The operation is as follows: By means of the several straps and buckles the device may be adjusted to figures of various sizes. The breast part or bandage may be contracted, so as to produce a desired pressure on the Wearers body and cause a gradual flow of the lacteal fluid from the nipple through the opening 0', and thence into the absorbent material 0 The pressure thus produced on the lacteal glands forces out the fluid, and thereby prevents inflammation and the attendant trouble. The pad H may be adjusted as desired, so as to effect a pressure on the abdomen and produce a reduction thereof and also a reduction of the uterus.
I do not wish to limit myself to any particular material in the construction of my device, as it is obvious that various kinds may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bandage, the combination of the front and rear parts H I, the hip-pads J J, the E, for connecting the ban Gage and pads aforeelastie bands J connecting the hip-pads, and said, and a belt engaged in the keepers of the 10 the straps and buckles K L, connecting the straps E, substantially as described.
hip-pads to the frcnt and rear pads H I, sub- IDA M FERRIS 5 stannally as herein shown and descrlbed.
2. The Combination, with a breast-bandage, *itnesscs: of an abdominal and back pad, straps for E. B. PACKER, connecting the said pads, thc keeper-stra1.)s BARBARA DRAKE.
