UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REBEOOA S. BROIVN, OF GREENVILLE, ILLINOIS.
ABDOlVllNAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,203, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed May 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REBECGA S. BROWN, of Greenvil1e,in the county of Bond and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what are known as abdominal supports or corsets. V
The object of my invention is to supply the want among women ence'inte, and others having an abnormal enlargement of the lower forward part of the body, with an abdominal support which shall in every way sustain the abdomen and be an easy and comfortable article of apparel, by notinterferin g with the motions and different positions of the wearer, and be at the same time adjustable to different forms of persons and also to the varying form of the same person.
Great difficulty has heretofore been experienced to provide a support or corset for the abdomen which would be at all times com fortable to the person and at the same time be effective in producing the result for which it had been designed; and therefore to overcome these deficiencies is the principal object of my invention, especially for the benefit of females. To accomplish this result I construct a support which consists of a corset fitting down low over the hips of the wearer, and of peculiar I construction, having joined in an adjustable manner to it on each side duplicate hermal bands, which extend from along the lower sides of the corset to between the legs, and are joined together at the rear of the person.
My invention particularly consists in the peculiar construction and application of these bands, in combination with the corset-body.
Th e peculiar construction of the various p arts I of my invention and its application will best be understood by reference to the drawings forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of my improved abdominal corset or support. Fig.
(Model.)
2 is a detail rear view of the same, showing the duplex spinal stays and lacings and the duplicate hernial bands.
In the drawings, A represents a corset that, for the sake of convenience, is open in front and the edges buttoned together when joined. The front of the corset is stiffened at the lower portion with whalebones, as indicated in drawings, just enough to make a firm support and prevent wrinkling. The back of the corset A is formed by uniting the sides with a'central portion, B, of the form indicated, by means of duplex lacings O or other equally suitable means.
Extending the full length of the corset on each side of the duplex lacings 0, both in the central piece, B, and the side pieces, are springstays and a sufficient number of whalebones to keep the corset in form, but yet not make it disagreeably stiff, they being so elastic as to yield easily to the movements of the body. The combination of the sides of the corset and the piece B, thus placing the adjustable lacings and stays at thepoints shown, is any important feature in the construction of my corset, for it thus gives the sustaining aid to the middle and lower portions of the back so much required at the time of life of a woman for which my corset is designed, and enables the most perfect adjustment with the least amount of trouble to the wearer.
Over the hips, at the lower portion of the corset A, are the bands D, of peculiar shape, which are attached to the corset A by buttons,
as shown, or any other reliable attachable method or means found most suitable. These bands D are fastened in front along the edge of the corset to a greater distance than at the back, as shown in the drawings, and, extending between the legs from the front, their ends overlap each other, Fig. 2, and are joined toproperties of the bands D render them most effective for use in adaptation to the varying proportions of the figure of the wearer.
As my invention is more particularly designed for the use of females during that period hereinbefore stated, and is intended for application and use through that time, the advantage of the detachable features of the bands D will be understood, one or more sets of which may be provided for the same corset.
The whole device is made to conform to the outlines of the figure and fits closely, coming down lower over the hips, as stated, at the sides, and held in position by the combined elements firmly, yet in all respects comfortably, being wholly free from any compression or strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In an abdominal supporter, the detachable bands D D, provided with fastening devices to secure their free ends upon the inside of the thighs, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REBEOGA S. BROWN.
