Description

E. N. KAUFFMAN.
KNEE PAD.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 3, 1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KNEE-PAD.
Application filed December 3, 1920.
Too whom it may concern.#
Be it known that I, EDWIN N. KAUFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mahaffey, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Knee-Pad, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a knee pad for the use of miners, so constructed that it will be closed all around to keep out slack or fine coal; it is also my object to provide in such a device a removable pad which can be taken out and the covering dried when wet. I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dev ce in use;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inner side of the device when spread out flat;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a leg encircling strip 1, having a pad pocket 2, which may be of any suitable stout material, such as leather. I further provide a reinforced opening 4 on the inside of strip 1, through which the soft cushion pad 3 may be inserted and removed. This pocket is spaced in from the outer longitudinal edge of strip 1, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so as to prevent dust from getting in. I provide elastic bands 5, which are secured to the strip 1 at their ends 6 and which are freely extensible within the longitudinal pockets -7. I provide suitable metal clasps or eyes 8,
which are of suitable size to engage over the buttons 9 when the pad is fastened in place, as shown in Fig. 1. further provide suitable side tabs 10, having button holes 11 for securing the tabs to buttons attached to the trousers of the person using the knee pad. The method of applying the device will be obvious from the illustration in Fig. l. The main strip 1 encircles the leg and is secured in place by elastic bands 5, the

loops 8 of which engage buttons 9. The cushion pad 3 may be withdrawn from pocket 4, to permit of quick drying of the holder and cushion pad.
I am aware that various knee pads have heretofore been devised, but in general these are both too expensive to manufacture and are ill adapted for the use of miners because their construction permits coal dust to work in under the knee, whereas my knee pads are especially designed for miners use.
It is within the contemplation of my in vention to use any suitable material in making the pad, such as fabric, leather, or a combination of different materials, as may prove most suitable. I prefer to make the member 2 of some heavy material, like leather.
What I claim is:
l. A knee pad comprising a main strip of sufficient length to encircle the leg, a plurality of longitudinally extending pockets, elastic straps secured at their inner ends to and freely extensible in said pockets, metal eyes on the ends ofsaid straps, buttons on the outer portion of the pad positioned to be engaged by the strap eyes when the device is applied, a pocket on the inner side of the main strip and extending transversely thereof, said pocket having its opening spaced from the edge of the strip, a cushion pad removably contained within said pocket, tabs attached to the main strip on either side of the pocket, and means for securing the tabs to buttons on the garment of the wearer, for the purposes hereinbefore described in this specification.
2. A knee pad comprising a main strip of sufficient length to encircle the leg, a plurality of longitudinally extending pockets, elastic straps secured at their inner ends to and freely extensible in said pockets, metal eyes on the ends of said straps, buttons on the outer portion of the pad positioned to be engaged by the strap eyes when the device is'applied, a pocket on the inner side of the main strip and extending transversely thereof, said pocket having its opening spaced from the edge of the strip, and a cushion pad removably contained within said ocket.
