DEVICE FOR USE IN THE ART OF BOXING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RONA D BRUCE CAMP- BELL, a subject of the King of England, residing in the county of Hants, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in the Art of Boxing, of which the following. is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for use in the art of boxing and the object is to provide a novel form of device distinct from a punching ball or sack in the form of an inflatable pad adapted to be either secured to a fixed member such as a wall, or attached to the person or be held in the hands of the latter in order that the art may be taught and acquired in a much more highly efficient manner than hitherto and in such a manner that the muscles of the arms, back, chest and legs may be more fully developed than with any similar practice device hitherto known.

The invention broadly comprises a leather or like casing with a rubber or other inflatable bladder contained therein, and a covering also of leather or similar material to the casing. The said casing can be either fixed on a suitable support or attached to a wooden frame attachable to said support, or can be fastened on a persons chest as by means of two straps or again can be provided with handles to be held by the person. The casing is preferably circular in shape of a diameter about twice its depth, the covering or front portion and also the back being formed of soft leather and the sides of said casing of stiff leather, the back being also preferably slightly concaved to readily fit the chest of the person to whom it is applied. Within the casing there may bea lining of soft leather, or elastic webbing or both, to form a resilient backing and protector for the inflatable bladder, said lining or webbing being attached at or near the upper rim of the casing sides. The bladder may be inserted into the casing through a suitably sized opening at the junction of the top and sides, which may be laced up or otherwise closed. A flange of stiff leather or like material is formed around the base of the casing, this flange being provided with two apertures and buckles on opposite sides for passage and attachment of straps for attaching the pad to the person.

In said drawings a designates the walls or sides of the casing formed of stiff leather to which is attached as by sewing the flange b of similar material, and to said flange is attached also as by sewing the back a of thin or soft leather shown in Fig. 2 as straight, but preferably concaved for the object above mentioned. To the upper or outer inside edge of the casing is attached an annular flange or flap (Z of thin leather to which are secured strips or webs c of elastic material crossing or intersecting each other as shown in Fig. 1, and within said flange is attached a lining f of thin or soft leather adapted to form a flange as at g to which is sewn or otherwisesecured the cover or outer portion it also of soft leather. Within the cover h and partly bearing against the lining f is a bladder 71 of rubber or convenient material having an inflating tube or nipple j and adapted to be inserted through an opening formed adjacent the sides a and cover it which may be closed as by lacing 7c. The flange is provided with two slits or apertures Z and opposite thereto with two buckles m straps (not shown) looped at one end or otherwise prevented from being drawn entirely through, being passed through said apertures, and passed over the wearers shoulders, then crossed and brought under the armpits, being subsequently fastened to thebuckle m. Handles n may be attached to the sides a as shown for gripping by the hands of the user, the flange being suitably cut away as at 0 to permit free passage to the fingers.

Fig. 4 shows one method of attaching the punch pad to a fixed support, wherein the flange b is provided with a number of holes p through which are passed screw studs 9 fixed to said support 1", the attachment being completed by nuts .9. In other methods the pad may be permanently riveted through the flange to a frame or a perforated board which may be suitably suspended on or fixed to the support, or again the pad may be strapped to a support by the same straps as those by which it is secured to the person as will be readily understood without further description or illustration. The frame may, if desired, be provided at the rear with rubber pads to take up shock.

I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form or construction of the punch pad above described, since the same may be produced in any desired manner, within the limits of the essential features of the invention which are defined within the appended claims. 4

In addition to its uses for teaching the art of boxing either when fixed to a support or held in the hands in which latter case the pad serves as a live target, the pad may also be used as a target for foils, as a targetfor sabers for pointing and cutting, as a target for bayonet fighting and as a developer and exerciser for the muscles of the arm, chest, back and legs.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A punch pad for use in the art of boxing, comprising a substantially rigid casing, an inflatable bladder contained within same and the major part of which bladderis inclosed by said casing, a backing of resilient material connected at its ends within the casing and against which the bladder bears, and a covering of soft material inclosing said bladder.

2. A punch pad for use in the art of boxing, comprising a substantially rigid casing of cylindrical form, a flat annular flange at one end of said casing, an inflatable bladder contained within said casing, a covering of soft material inclosing said bladder, and means for securing said flange to a support.

A punch pad for use in the art of boxing, comprising a casing of cylindrical form, a substantially rigid flange secured to one end of the casing, an inflatable bladder con tained within said casing, the major part of which bladder is inclosed by the casing, a backing of resilient material connected at its ends within the casing against which the A. A punch pad for use in the art of box- I ing comprising a casing of cylindrical form, a substantially rigid flange secured to one end of the casing, means for securing said flange to a support, an inflatable bladder contained within the casing and inclosed thereby for its greater part, a covering of resilient material inclosing the exposed portion of said bladder and a backing of resilient material connected to its ends within the casing against which the rear of the bladder bears.

5. A punch pad for use in the art of boxing comprising a substantially rigid casing, an inflatable bladder contained within same, a covering of soft material inclosing said bladder, and a pair of handles carried by the casing.

6. A punch pad for use in the art of boxing comprising a casing of annular form, a substantially rigid flange secured to one end ofthe casing, an inflatable bladder secured within same, a covering of resilient material inclosing said bladder, a backing of resilient material within the casing against which the bladder bears, means carried by the pad for attaching the pad to a support and a pair of handles carried by the exterior of the casing.
