SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,904, dated June 28, 1892. Application filed December 18, 1891. Serial No. 415,523. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE LAWSON, a citizen 0f the United States, residing at Wilkes- Barre', in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side view of my improved toy, showing the string attached by which the toy is operated or swung; Fig. 2, a central sectional elevation with the string removed; Fig. 3, a modification thereof.

The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and a very amusing toy for children which will produce awhistlin g sound when the toy is swung around against the air; and it consists in a toy constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a whistle constructed, preferably, of sheet metal, the one shown being of the ordinary kind, and therefore I lay no claim thereto. This whistle is placed and held within a ring B of soft rubber, which has a groove circumfereutially upon its interior, as shown at a, so as to form a seat for the outer edge of the whistle and firmly retain it in position by' the elasticity of the material from which the ring is composed. This ring 13 is molded or otherwise provided with a ball 0, which, if preferred, may be hollow, as shown, and on the ring diametrically opposite the ball is an eye I) for attaching thereto a suitable cord or string 0, elastic or otherwise. This cord or string, if found desirable, may have at its free end a ring 6?, through which one finger of the hand may be inserted, and to prevent the cord from twisting when the toy is swung around thereby a'swiveled snap-hook may be used, as shown at e. The ring B forms a frame for the whistle A and can be removed therefrom when desired and a new one substituted. In use the child will catch the string with one hand and swing the toy around, and the resistance of the air will cause the toy to warble like a bird.

If preferred, the ball 0 may be dispensed with without departing from. the principle of my invention, such construction being shown v the whistle become broken or otherwise injured to render it useless it can be removed from the frame and replaced by a new one. The ball also has its advantages, in that it acts as a counter-balance for the whistle when swung around and enables it to swing much easier and more uniformly than would be the case without it.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a toy, the combination of an elastic frame of soft rubber and a whistle removably held therein by the elasticity of the material anda string attached to the frame for swinging it around, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a toy, the combination of a whistle with a suitable frame of elastic material having a ball or other counter-balance of like ma- 'terial depending therefrom and a string for swinging the frame around, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I

3. A toy consisting of a whistle, a frame therefor of soft rubber, a counter-balance depending from the frame, and a string attached thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described. 3 V
