W. P. ARMSTRONG.
WRESTLING BXERGISING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16. 1012.

WILLIAM IP. ARMSTRONG, 0F WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIG-NOR` T0 THE STRONG .ARM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF VIRGINIA.
WRESTLING EXERCISING- DEVICE.
Patented June 9, 1914.
T0 all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, lrViLLIAM P. ARM- srnoso, citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrcstling Exercising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in eXercising devices, and is particularly designed for use by children in fostering their inclination to wrestle, and to develop their ability in this direction, and at the same time to afford amusement or play for the child.
The invention belongs to that type of exercising device disclosed `in Letters Patent of the United States, granted to me October 81, 1911 No. 1,007,028, and consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front vertical and sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view at u right angles to that of Fig. l.
In these drawings l is the rolling or rocking base of the device of the general form disclosed in the patent above referred to, differingz however, therefrom in the particulars hereinafter mentioned.
The general shape of the figure is an important factor in my present device, this roughly approximating the human form in order that the child in wrestling with the figure may have a choice of holds thereon, and in order to prevent injury to the child the body of the figure must be composed of material slightly yielding. The figure has a head portion 2, stub arms 3 projecting lat` emily-therefrom and body portionll. This body is composed of a canvas suit or cover 5, stuffed with raw cotton, hair, excelsior or other similar yielding material indicated at 6. The figure is supported upon an upright member 7, which may consist of a board bolted at its lower end to a metal clip or piece 8, embedded or secured to the base 1, preferably by casting it in place. This board has a series of perforations 9 disposed at diierent points throughout its extent and a layer of burlap, cotton batting or similar material is secured to the board by means of stitches or threads 10 passing through the openings 9. iis thin layer of cotton batting or burla covers the board onboth sides, and this furnishes a foundation to which the cotton batting or stuffing 6 together with its canvas covering 5 may be secured by stitches. In applyin the canvas suit or cover together with t e fillin material over the board, the suit is turned lnside out and is applied head portion first to th e upper end of the board and then the suit 1s gradually drawn down over the board so' that the outer side of the canvas cover or suit will come outermost, and during this yoperation of drawing the suit down into place the cotton batting or filling is applied first at the upper end of the board and then at successive points downward therefrom as the suit or cover progresses downwardly in this drawing action. The suit or cover having `been drawn down and stuied, it ma be secured in place by stitching through from the outer side to the foundation layer and thence outwardly again, and by means of this stitching the padding and suit or cover may be drawn in tighter at some points than others to get the desired form, as for instance the shape of the leg. The lower edge of the suit or cover material may be turned upwardly as indicated at 11.
As before stated, the rolling or rocking base l is of the general form disclosed in the patent above mentioned. In the present case, however, I provide this base with an outwardly extending flange 12 which is fiat on its upper side, and to this` flange is secured a rim 13 of wood, and upon this rim an `upholstered layer of material is supported as at 14. The base is flattened at 15. By the use of the wooden rim and the uphol stering thereon, protection is afforded against injury to the child. The body of the device being formed of the canvas suit and the stufling of slightly yielding material, will also aiiord protection against injury, and also a proper surface to be gripped, and the holds, which may be secured by the child, of this figure may be similar to those secured upon an opposing child in wrestling, the ligure in effect presenting a head, nedl( portion, shoulders, arms, and a body.
'Ihe padded ligure covered with the canvas suit, provides a body having the quality of yielding to pressure at any point, and one enabling the exercising child to obtain a grip or hold similar to that which would be ing a rolling and` rocking base, an u right With a layer of foundation material t ereon and a padded figure secured to the said foundation, substantially as described.y
2. A Wrestling exercising device compris.- ing a rolling and rocking base, an'upright having openings, a layer of material held to the upright by threads passing through the openings, and a body ligure stitched to the said foundation layer, substantiallyA as described.
3. A Wrestling exercising device comprising a rolling and rocking base, a perforated upright secured to the base, and a `body figure secured to the upright by threads passing through the upright, substantially` as described. 4. In combination in a wrestling `exercising device, a rolling and rocking base, a figure supported thereon, said base having a 11p or iange atits upper edge, and a protector secured to said ange, substantlally as described. In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
