HUGH REILLY AND MARY JANE REILLY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,004, dated November 24, 1885.
Application filed December 26, 1884. Serial No. 151,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HUGH REILLY and MARY JANE REILLY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists in a vest-like device to be used by children in playing horse, and it is provided with lacing, buttons, or equivalent devices in front or behind, or both in front and behind, whereby the vest may be enlarged or contracted to enable it to fit children of different sizes. The reins may be permanently fastened to the back part of the device, or, preferably, to avoid liability of their being torn off, they pass through elastic confining pieces or loops and encircle the chest of the child, so that the pull or strain during play is not upon the point of union between the reins and the vest, but solely upon the reins. At suitable points upon the vest we attach bells, the tinkling of which adds to the amusement of the children.
The drawing represents the vest spread out flat, as though upon a table, the front lacing or buttons being unfastened.
A A are the two halves of the vest, (if it be made in two pieces, although, as stated, it may be all in one piece, or, rather, sewed together as an ordinary vest is made,) with lacings, or buttons and buttoaholes, hooks and eyes, or other equivalent devices up the front or up the back only. The lacing may be placed at the sides under the arms and over the shoulders, if desired.
The material of which the vest is made may be cloth of any kind, leather, strong paper, or other equivalent material.
B B are armholes.
C O are bells, made of any suitable material, which, in the instance shown in the drawings, are attached to the bottom only of the vest.
D D are the reins, which pass through confining strips or loops E E, fastened to the outside of the vest, and which are preferably made of strong elastic material -such, for example, as the rubber webbing used in gaitershoes-so that in the event of considerable pulling on the reins the elastic will yield to a certain extent, and preventthe loopsDD from being torn off.
The reins may be made of cord, leather, tape, or other-suitable material, and. they may be one continuous piece, or preferably united in front bya buckle, a snap, or by simply knotting them together.
F is the lacing, which we prefer to provide both in front and behind, passing through the eyelet-holes shown. It may be used only in front or only behind; but if used in both places the vest can be made more accurately to fit children of different sizes; and instead of the lacing, buttons and button-holes, hooks and eyes, or equivalent fastening devices may be employed. We prefer the lacing, however, because adjustability can thereby more readily and effectively be obtained.
The device may be bound, trimmed, and ornamented as desired; and when the children desire to play with two horses or a F span, as they say, one half of the vest may be attached to the left side of one child, and the other half to the right side of another child, a string for lacing being used of sufficient length to pass around the side of the child, and laced from the eyelet-holes in front around to and through those in the back edge of each half.
Having described our invention,we claim- 1. The combination of the vest A, provided with the lacings F and the reins D, substantially as set forth.
'2. The combination of the vestA, provided with the lacing F, the reins D, and the bands E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the vest A, the reins D, and the elastic bands or loops E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the vestA, the reins D, the lacing F, and the bells 0, attached to the Vest, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination of the vest A, the reins D, the lacing F, the bells 0, attached to the vest, and the elastic bands or loops E, whereby the reins are held to the vest, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination of the vest, made in two entirely distinct and separate parts united by laeings or like devices both in front and behind, and the reins D, attached to the 5 two parts of the vest, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, this 20th day of December, A. D. 1884. v
HUGH REILLY. MARY JANE REILLY. Witnesses:
M. B. ABBOTT, S. W. OoNNELL.
