Description

L. B; TEBEAU. HAND SHIELD.
APPLIOATION FILED AUG.17, 1909.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
Inventor rm: NORRIS PETERS co, WASHINGTON. n. c.
r orrro.
LEWIS B. TEBEAU, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
HAND-SHIELD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIs B. TEBEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved hand shield, and the object is to provide a hand shield for protecting the palm of the hand, a portion of the thumb, and a portion of the forefinger, leaving the remaining fingers and the back of the hand substantially free of cover, the shield being particularly adapted for use by motormen or in protecting the hands where tools such as hammers or mallets are used continuously.
My invention consists in the novel features of the hand shield formed and constructed of sheet material as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan of a hand shield embodying my invention showing the palm side thereof, the same being illustrated as it appears on the hand of the user. Fig. 2 is a plan of the back of the shield.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the drawing, 5 is a palm protecting portion having two lateral edges 6 and 7 which when the shield is applied to the hand are separated by a wide space leaving the back of the hand practically uncovered and free. A finger piece 8 formed integral with the palm protecting portion 5 projects slightly therebeyond, said finger piece being adapted to encircle and cover a part of the index finger of the hand. A thumb piece 9 secured to the palm protecting portion 5 by stitches is adapted to encircle and cover a portion of the thumb of the hand. Secured to the palm protecting portion 5 by stitches are two tabs 10 and 11 having secured there to buckles l2 and 13, respectively, which receive perforated straps 14 and 15, respectively, secured by stitches to the hand protecting portion 5 adjacent to the edge 6 thereof. By means of these straps and Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 17, 1909.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 513,241.
buckles the shield may be readily attached to and detached from the hand and may be ad usted to fit hands of different sizes. It Wlll be observed, however, that the back of the hand except where the straps extend across the same is free so that the hand may. be clenched very readily and Without causing buckling and wrinkling which would take place if the shield were extended across the back of the hand.
By forming the straps and tabs of separate pieces it is possible to make the shield of smaller pieces of leather than would otherwise be possible and this construction has also the added advantage of permitting the shield to conform to the shape of the hand when the hand is clenched.
In the use of my improved shield the hand while being well protected where protection is needed is quite free from restraint owing to the fact that the sides thereof are connected solely by the straps. I/Vhile I have shown adjustable straps connecting the lateral edges of the palm protecting portion, it will be evident that any equivalent adjust,- able connection might be employed, if desired.
The various parts of the shield may be made of any suitable sheet material such as leather or cloth and if desired the different parts may be made of different materials to make the device suitable for special uses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
As a new article of manufacture, a hand shield having a palm protecting portion terminating at opposite sides in lateral edges and adapted to cover the side of the hand between the base of the thumb and the index finger, said palm protecting portion being provided with anintegral finger piece to encircle a portion of the index finger of the hand, a thumb piece formed of a separate piece of sheet material secured to said palm protecting portion and adapted to encircle a portion of the thumb including the base thereof, and a pair of adjustable straps formed of separate pieces of sheet material attached to said palm protecting portion adj acent to opposite sides thereof-and arranged my hand in presence of two subscribing witto extend across the back of the hand, each nesses. of said straps consisting of two parts which are widened toward their respective points 5 of attachment with the edges of said palm Witnesses:
protecting portion. HENRY ROBINSON, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ELWIN L. PAGE.
