LEATHER-WORKERS THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application filed September 13, 1912. Serial No. 720,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD MANSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Riversdale, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Leather-\Vorkers Thimble; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the palm protectors employed by leather workers and others in sewing operations in which considerable pressure is required on the back of the sewing needle in order to force it through its work.
The invention has been designed in order to provide an improved construction of such device by means of which the attachment thereof to the workers hand is made in such a manner as to leave the fingers and thumb free and in which also the needle end will be adequately prevented from slipping when being pressed on.
The protector is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view thereof in the working position upon a hand. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Figs. 3 and a are respectively cross section and front elevation of the needle engaging disk of the protector.
The protector is formed by a band of leather A preferably of a soft pliable nature, that is adapted to encircle the hand and is formed with the loop or opening B through which the thumb is passed. "When therefore the band is slipped down over the hand and the thumb passed through its loop, the band will lie across the palm in the manner shown in Fig. 1. This will leave the fingers and thumb quite free to be moved about and thus to perform the working functions required in sewing.
Riveted to the front of the band is the metal disk 0 positioned so as to overlie the thumb ball of the palm. This disk is formed with a raised flange D extending around its bottom edge and sides and leaving the top open. The disk is also made of a thickness tapering downward from the bottom to the top edge so as to provide a correspondingly inclined face on the disk. The portion of the disk within the flange has its surface pitted, as at E or otherwise roughened. In use therefore the disk C will be caused to engage the needle end to push it through its work, such end passing through the opening left between the flange ends and being engaged by the roughened inclined surface inside the flange. The needle end will thus be effectively gripped and prevented from slipping while the pressure of the palm is being applied to the needle, while the flange will serve to retain the needle end upon the disk so that there will be no liability of it sliding ofl to either side or the back and on to the band or hand.
l/Vhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a palm protector, the combination of a single piece of leather provided with a pair of short tongues secured together at their free ends to form a thumb opening, and a pair of longer tongues secured together at their free ends to form a band for the hand when the protector is thereon; a circular metal disk riveted to said piece over the ball of the palm of the hand and having its eX- posed face inclined toward said short tongues and provided with a plurality of pits and a U-shaped raised flange extending around the bottom and sides of the disk except on the side toward said short tongues.
52. In a palm protector, the combination of a flexible band adapted to encircle the palm and provided with a thumb loop adapted to surround the thumb; and a metal disk secured to said band over the ball of the palm of the hand and having its exposed face inclined toward said thumb loop and provided with a roughened surface and a raised flange encircling said face except on the side toward said loop.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DONALD MANSON. Witnesses J. H. TrroMPsoN, S. D. NEILL.
