TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, PATRICK KENNY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a. new` and useful Improvement in Shirt Studs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,`and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in whichi Figure I is a top view of the upper plate ot' my improved stud.
Figure 2 is a central cross-section 'of the same through the line :v 2:, iig. I.
Figure 3 is an under side view oi' the under plate.
Figure 4 is a central cross-section of the same through the line w w, lig. 3.

My invention is designed to furnish a shirt stud by the useof which, from the elasticity ot' the connection between the plates, the button-holes in the shirt bosom will be less liable to be torn or injured, and which will be more easily inserted and removed than the studs now in common use with rigid connection. And it consists oi` a shirt stud the plates oi' which are connected together with an elastic connection, as hereinafter more fully described. i
A is the upper and B the' under plate of the stud. These may -be `mudevoi anyot the ordinary materials of which studs or buttons are now made, and of any of the ordinary forms. They should have holes through their centres, and these holes should be conntersunk, that of the plate A from the upper side, and that of the plate B from the under side, as represented in the drawings. The connection between the plates is formed by rubber .or other elastic rings or bands, C, one or more to each stud. I prefer to use two rings, but the number is not material. Through the ends oi' these rings C are passed short pins, D, as represented in tig. 9. r)These pins D should hc of such a length as to reach across and pass into the enlarged part of the holes through the plates A and B and rest upon the shoulder formed in said plates, as shown in iig. 7. This forms the connection between the upper and lower plates. 'This method of securing the elastic connection I prefer, but the connection may be made in various other ways; the material pointbeing that the two plates be attached to each other by an elastic connection. The stud may be completed and at the same time ornamented byinserting a stone or. other ornament in the plates, as shown in gs. 5, 6, and'7. By this arrangement the button-hole is relieved from sustaining the/full force of any sudden strain by the elasticity ol' the connection C.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent- 'Ihe perforated plates A and B, countersunk on opposite sides, forming shoulders in the centre ofthe plates, on which bear pins I), around which the connecting loops C pass, holding the plates together with an unbroken iexible connection, in the manner described for the purpose specilied.
'.lhe above specification of my `invention signed by me this 27th day of December, 1865.
PATRICK KENNY.
