Description

CHARLES, MUDL-ER, (IF-CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 78,535, dated June 2, 1868; antedated May 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
@itsr .tlgehule rrfttrrrn inibire gaitas gstellt ma mating giri nf tige are.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNi Be it known that I, CHARLES MUDLER, ot Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of`Ol1io, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buttons; and I do hereby deel-.1reI that the i`o1- lowing is a full and complete description ofthe same, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings making :t part oi`-this specification, in which- Figure lis a front; view of the button. Figure 2 is a side view. Figure 3 is a view of the oppositeside of fig. 1. Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sections. Like letters of reference refer to like parte in the views.
In Iig.-1, A represents the head of the button, which is secured to the back-plate, B, Aby means oi'ua shank or pin, C, iig. 2.l
The buttons new 'in use are so constructed, that when buttoned the edge of the button-hole in the suspender A will wear and rub on the thread by which the button is secured-umd in a short time cause it to drop o, the
thread being cut away by the/constant wearing of the suspender.
To avoid this trouble, the button referred to is made as shown, and, vinstead Obeing secured at the centre,
is sewed on through the holes a, around the edge of the plate A, shown in the drawing, and the wearing and rubbing of the button-holevwill be on the shank or pin C.
To prevent the suspender from -wearing on the thread in the edge of the plate, when the buttons are made as described, the plate A is provided with a shoulder, D ,ishown in iig. 4. Thus the suspender will wearon this instead of on the thread, and prevent its being worn oit', or, .to still further prevent any danger of the thread being worn, the edge of the plate A may be grooved out; as shown at c, fig. 5, which is a transverse section of a button with said plate, grooved as stated. Thus the thread is below the edge of the plate, and, if thought best, the shoulder D referred to can be dispensedwith, so that the plate A may be a plairi disk.
vThis button may be used on anything where the thread is exposed, and liable to be worn off.
I claim the hmmm-constructed of two plates or disks, A B, having a rigid connection by means of the shank or pin C, and the lower disk being shouldered or grooved out, so as to forni a circular depression, 1u which the thread used in sewing en the button is buried below the plane of said disk, the whole combined in the manner as and foethe purpose set forth, as a new article of manufacture. Y
CHAS. MUDLER.
