Description

(No Model.)
A. M. LUNDGARD.
OVBBALLS.
No, 5863,10'2. Patented July 13, 1897.
IN VEN T 0R WITNESSES'.
ANTON M. LUNDGARD, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,102, dated July 13, 1897. Application filed April 3, 1897. Serial No. 630,568. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ANTON M. LUNDGARZD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overall Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make an d use the same.
My invention relates to overall garments of that class or description which comprises a pants or leg portion and a jacket or body portion made in a continuous single piece; and the object is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby when the wearer stoops the strain upon the garment is relieved, thus not only obviating liability of tearing or otherwise injuring the garment, but rendering it'more comfortable to the wearer.
The invention consists, essentially, in a garment of the above description having a horizontal slit or opening made in the back thereof at or near the junction of the leg and body portions, and an enlarged strip or piece of material inserted in said opening and secured to the edges thereof, and adapted when the wearer assumes an upright position to form a fold or plait, and to be distended or extended when a stooping position is assumed, in combination with a stiff strip one end of which is secured to the back of said body portion, while the free end engages with said folded portion or plait, and an elastic strip secured to said insertion and the back of the garment, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an overall garment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View, the front of the garment being broken away to show the insertion in the back and the connections. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the same, showing the insertion distended, as when the wearer assumes a stooping position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion of the body, taken on the line a: cc, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the insertion distended. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view on the line y y, Fig. 2, showing covers or pockets for the stiff and elastic strips.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the garment, consisting of the pants or leg portion 2 and the jacket or body portion 3, made in one continuous piece, and the body portion provided with sleeves 4, and also formed with a front opening the edges of which are provided with buttons and buttonholes, as usual. The back of the garment at or near the junction of the leg and body portions is formed with a transverse or horizontal slit or openings, to the edges of which is secured an enlarged strip or piece A, which, when the wearer assumes an erect position,
will fold down or form a plait, as seen in Fig. e
4. Secured to the back of the garment is a downwardly-extending strip C, of Celluloid, whalebone, or other stiff material, the lower or free end of which is adapted to engage with the saidv insertion and cause the same to fold, as in Fig. 4.
The letter D designates a headed rivet by which the said strip is secured to the garment, and to the head thereof is connected a rubber or other elastic strip E, the lower end of which is connected with a button B, secured to said insertion. The letters F and G designate covers or pockets for the stiff and elastic strips, respectively.
In use when the wearer of the garment is in an erect position the insertion will be folded, as seen in Fig. 4, the lower end of the stiif strip engaging with said fold. When the wearer stoops, however, the back of the garment will ride up, carrying with it said strip and allowing the insertion to be distended, thus relieving the garment of the strain. Vhen the wearer again resumes his erect position, the elastic strip will contract and fold the said insertion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In an overall garment comprising the leg and body portions made in a single continuous piece, of the piece inserted in the back of the garment at or near the j unction of the leg and body portions, the stiff strip secured at In testimony whereof I have signed this its upper end to said back and its lower end specification in the presence of two subscribengaging with said insertion, and the elastic. ing witnesses.
band or strip secured to said insertion at its ANTON M. LUNDGARD. lower end and its upper end connected with Witnesses:
the back of the garment, substantially as de- HANS J. WINTHERLIOH,
scribed. FoRREsT SMITH.
