UNITED STATES GEORGE CUTTS, OF
PATENT @EEICE.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,549, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed June 2,1897. Serial No. 639,193. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Oorrs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mens Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that species of drawers properly designated as mens bodyless drawers, and is particularly suitable for those drawers which are made of light-weight material for summer wear or for drawers to be worn in winter under or over the common drawers.
Essentially, the invention consists in drawers wherein, first, the legs are separate and independent and are connected at the crotch by a band or strap, so that there is a small interval between said legs at this point, which interval permits of the easy adaptation of the drawers to the other clothing and obviates undue stress upon the drawers near this part; second, the upper parts of the drawers are constructed to permit the suspension of the drawers by fastening them to the inside of the trousers or other outer garment, and, third, the upper margins of each of the halves of the drawers are so shaped and constructed as to obviate undue stress upon those parts of the drawers from any posture of the wearer.
By my construction of the drawers as aforesaid and the suspension of them from some outer garment instead of by suspenders over the shoulders or a strap from the drawers to the shirt I have overcome the serious defects which have hitherto prevented the general Referring to the drawings which accompany the specification to aid the description, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing another form thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the means for connecting the drawers to the trousers of the wearer.
Referring to Fig. 1, the improved drawers are made with two separate legs, each of which is provided with an upper or body part, as shown, and I prefer that the legs of the drawers shall be made loose-fitting and so as to well fill the trousers-legs. At the crotch A B the said legs are connected together by the strap S, and either both ends of said strap S are permanently connected to the said legs by extending the ends of said strap about two inches down its respective leg and stitching the ends to the legs, as shown in Fig. 1, or one end of said strap is permanently connected to its corresponding leg, and the other end thereof is adapted to be removably connected tothe other drawers-leg, Fig. 2. If the said other end is to be fastened to its drawers-leg by buttons, it is sufficient to place two buttons 0 c on the said free end of the strap and provide corresponding buttonholes b b in the proper drawers-leg, Fig. 2. Thus the buttons are set so as to be farthest from the flesh of the wearer. Said strap Sis preferably made about two inches wide and of two or more thicknesses of material, which is preferably jean or muslin or the drawers material reinforced with jean or muslin, and, as hereinbefore mentioned, the effect of using said strap S is to leave a small interval, preferably about an inch, between the two drawerslegs, as is clearly shown in the drawings, whereby the comfort of the wearer is increased and the strain on the drawers at the crotch diminished.
The tops of the drawers upon the sides 0 D and C D are finished with a reinforcement of two or more thicknesses of the drawers material .or of the drawers material with any suitable reinforcing fabric, usually about eight to ten inches in length and one and onehalf inches in depth, to provide a ground for any suitable fastener for upholding the drawers by connection with the inner sides of the trousers or common drawers at two or more points a a on each side, about midway up the hip of the trousers a a, Fig. 3. the fasteners are used at two points, these points will be seven to nine inches apart. I also prefer that the horizontal top edges 0 D G D of each leg of the drawers shall be midway between front and back, as is indicated in the drawings, and that the upper margins A O, AD, B C, B D shall be sloped on concave arcs with the same radius of curvature, or, in
other words, shall be similar curves, so that the drawers shall be reversible and shall also be freed from undue stress at these margins.
Now, having described myinvention, what I claim is- 1. The herein-described drawers comprising the leg portions each terminating at the upper end in a body portion, said body portions being cut away at both front and back at their inner edges on concaved curved lines and being united at the crotch portions by a narrow strip and provided at their upper edges with fastening devices to engage with. the outer garment, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described drawers comprising two separate leg portions each terminating at the upper end in a body portion, said body portions being cut away at both front and back at their inner edges on similar concave curved lines and being united at the crotch by a narrow strip an end of which is permanently fastened to one leg of the drawers and the free end of the strip being provided with devices for attachment to the other leg of the' drawers, and said body portions being provided at their upper edges with reinforcements and devices thereon for attachment to the outer garment, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
