ALLEN XV. HOUSE, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANTEL.
SPECIFICATION rorming part of Letters Patent No. 493,404, dated March 14, 1893.
Serial No. 440,895- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Belt known that I, ALLEN WV. HOUSE, a citi- Ten of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and seful Sheet-Metal Mantel, of which the folwing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nantels, and refers particularly to mantels formed of sheet-metal, the object of my improvement being to provide a mantel capable of adjustment to different sizes of fire-places, and at the same possessing the requisite strength, durability, and rigidity.
A further object of my invention is to provide adjusting means which are simple in con struction and enable the parts to be independently adjusted at the place of attachment.
Further objects of my invention will ap pear in the following description, and the novel features thereof Will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a mantel embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view, taken through the coupling by which the two sections of the breast are united. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View through one of the jambs. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the adjustable bases.
A A represent the side-jambs, provided with the inner and outer returns B, the inner returns terminating in the facings O, which are adapted to rest against the wall close to the sides of the chimney or fire-place opening. To the front surfaces of the jambs are attached the ornamental pilasters D D, provided at their upper ends with the crowns or caps E, upon which is supported the horizontal shelf F. The shafts G of the said pilasters are extended nearly to thelower ends of the jambs, and are finished or covered, as are the bottoms of the jambs, by the verticallyadjustable bases H. The sides of said bases are carried rearwardly to form flanges I, the rear ends of the outer flanges being returned or bent inwardly to form guides K to engage the rear edges of the jambs, and the inner flanges being bent inwardly upon the above-mentioned facings, and then returned, or bent outwardly and forwardly, to form guides L to slide upon upon the outer sides thereof being formed by bending the edges of the outside flanges. The breast of the mantel, which is shown at 0, comprises two relatively adjustable sections P P, which are attached, respectively, to the upper ends of the side-jambs and overlap each other at their inner ends, said overlapping ends being united by the coupling Q. This coupling comprises the upper guide R, which is carried by the section P and embraces the upper edge of the section P, whereby the latter is enabled to slide through the guide, and the lower guide, R, which is attached to the lower edge of the section P and extends to the rear and engages the lower edge of the section P, whereby the latter is enabled to slide freely therein.
The conformation and configuration of the mantel, including various ornaments which may be attached thereto, form no part of my invention, as they may be varied at the discretion of the manufacturer; but I have shown,
at the center of the breast of the mantel, a
breast-plate S, to cover and conceal the coupling which is employed to unite the inner ends of the sections of the breast. This breastplate being adjustable, may be arranged to suit the adjustment of the sections.
From the above description, it will be obvious that the width of my improved mantel may be altered at will to suit the width of the fire-place opening, no securing devices being required to hold the parts in their adjusted 5 positions, and also that the height of the mantel may be adjusted by sliding the bases downwardly or upwardly upon the jambs. It will be seen that the bases conform at their outer and inner sides to the shape of the side-jambs, whereby the appearance of this part of the device is the same with all adjustments of the bases.
Having thus described my invention, what IOO I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In a device of the class described, the side jambs and the horizontal breast connecting said jambs at their upper ends and comprising independent overlapping sections P P, attached to and carried by the jambs, respectively, the section P being provided at its upper edge with a guide R to engage the upper edge of the section P, and the latter being provided at its lower edge with a guide R to engage the lower edge of the section P, substantially as specified. V
2. A portable and adjustable mantel comprising hollow bases, independent side-jambs adjustably fitted at their lower ends,.respectively, in said bases, a breastformed in separate overlapping sections permanently attached at their outer ends to the jambs, means to secure the overlapping inner ends of the sections of the breast together, and a separable shelf supported upon the upper ends of the side jambs, all substantially as specified.
3. In a mantel, the combination with the side-jambs provided at their inner and outer sides with returns and at their inner sides with facings, of the vertically-adjustable bases provided with rearwardly-extending flanges bearing guides to engage, respectively, the rear edges of the outside returns and the inner edges of said facings, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own-I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
