'. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,501, dated December 14, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BAKER VADEN Burrs, of Halifax, in the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented .,a new and Improved Protector for Fire-Places, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a practical device to be attached to open fireplaces to prevent coal, sparks, 810., fromsnapping out into the room; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1. is a front elevation of a mantelpiece, fire-place, and hearth having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken 011 the line 00 0c of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the fender, taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.

To the sides of the fire-place A, over the hearth B, are secured the angle-plates O C, which are formed with the loops 0 c, to receive and hold the protector D in front of the fireplace, and so that it rests upon the hearth B.

The protector D maybe a plain fender made of sheet metal; but I prefer to form it with a da1nper,so that by opening the damper the protector will in no mannerinterfere with the draft of the fireplace, and for this purpose I form the protector of two plates, the inner plate, a, and outer plate, I). The inner plate, a, is slotted to form the openings a, and this plate is of full length to reach to the outer edges of the loops 0, and it is rolled at its edges to form grooves a, to hold the outer plate, b, by its 40 edges. The outer plate, I), is slotted at b to correspond with the slots ain. the plate a, and it is shorter than the plate a and provided with the handles (1 d, by which it may be conveniently moved longitudinally in the grooves 64 to open or close the slots. The plate b is slotted in the center, as shown atb, and is there connected with the plate a by the headed button or rivet 11, to prevent the plates from spreading apart at the center. By sliding the plate 12 so the slots 1) thereof coincide with the solid portions of the plate c the protector presents a solid surface in front of the fire-place, so that no coal or sparks can snap from the fireplace into theroom, and by moving the plate Z so its slots coincide with the slots of the plate a the fender permits a draft into the fire-place.

By means of the handles d the protector may be conveniently lifted from the holders 0 and replaced, so that the fire-place may be conveniently cleaned or replenished with fuel.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The within described fire-place protector, comprising the plates 0, bent toform the corresponding loops 0, and adapted to fit over the angles of the jainbs, and the register D, fitted into loops 0, and consisting of the slotted inner plate, a, having its upper and lower edges bent to form grooves a and slotted outer plate, b, sliding in said grooves, and provided with handles, as specified.
