Fl REGPLACE TTACl-l Nl ENT'.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 321,588, dated July 7, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. Dickinson, of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful AImprovement in Fire-Place Attachments, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an attachment to be applied to the front of a tire-place, to serve as a blower to regulate the draft of the chimney, and to answer the purpose of a summer front.
The invention consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantiallyV as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiieaticn, in which similar letters of referencel indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is afront elevation of my improved attachment partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line x in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the roller-supporting bracket, and a face view of a portion of the mantel; and Fig. et is a detail view of the roller-stop.
In the front of the ordinary mantel-piece A., and above the nre-place, two slots, a', are made at each side of the tire-place. Two brackets, G, provided with hooks a., adapted to enter the slots a in the mantel A, and engage the same, are held upon the mantel, as shown in Fig. 3. A roller, I), is journaled in the bracket O, and to the said roller-is secured the upper end of the rolling screen E. The screen E is formed of a series of metallic slats, b, connected together by links, orhinged to each other, or the said rolling screen E may be 'formed of a suitable incombustible material in any of the well known ways. One end of the roller Dis prolonged, and provided with a knob or handle, F, by which it may be turned, and between the said handle and the bracket is placed a polygonal wheel, G, which is pressed by a spring, H, secured to t-he front of the tire-place. By turning the handle F more or less ofthe screen E may be wound upon the roller D, and the pressure of the spring II against the polygonal wheel G will retain the said roller in any position in which it may be placed. A covering, I, of
sheet metal or other suitable material, is secured to the front of the mantel and ineloses the brackets O and roller D. rlhe end of the said covering I is slotted to permitthe handle F to project through it for convenience in handling. By turning the roller as described the screen E may be raised so as to entirely open the fireplace, or it may be lowered so as to entirely close it, when it will act as a blower or as asummer front. It may also be placed at any desired height to regulate the draft of the chimney and to prevent smoke entering into the apartment, and in this position it will also confine the draft upon the tire, so as to carry off ashes while the iire is being poked.
It is obvious that in cases where the iireplace front is of wood the slots for receiving the hooks c a may be formed in iron plates to be attached to the front of the mantel.
I do not limit or confine my invention to the exact form shown and described. Y
I am aware of the fact that a curtain-roller has been provided with a earn-projection, which serves as a bearing for the free end of a spring, and that a screen has been suspended in front of a nre-place, the same being adapted to be rolled upon a roller operated by asliding end piece.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent" 1. In a i'ire place attachment, the metallic or nre-proof flexible curtain with its roller supported in brackets detaehably connected by hooks and slots to the mantel or fire-place front, said roller having a handle and an irregular wheel or cam held by the action of a spring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hre-place attachment, the metallic or fire-proof flexible curtain with its roller supported in brackets detachably connected by hooks and slots to the mantel or lire-place front, said roller having a handle and an irregular wheel or cam held by the action of a spring, and the covering overhanging the brackets, roller, and wheel, with its spring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOS. W. DIOKINSON.
