W. T. FOSTER, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA. Letters Patent No. 69,982, dated October 22, 1867.
ADJUSTABLE HOOD FOR GOAL-GRATES AND PIREPLAOBS.
GU 2 grlgihnlz refemh in in time 33mm 21m llllll making and at tlge same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. T. FOSTER, of Jefi'ersonville, in the county of Clark, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in providing an adjustable coal or ash-fly for the ordinary fire-grate and for other fireplaces, whereby a great advantage is gained in various ways, as will be herein described.
Figure 1 represents a front view of a coal-grate, with the ash-fly or cowl folded back, or closed in out of the way.
Figure 2 represents a side view, showing the cowl as in fig. 1.
Figure 3 represents the cowl drawn forward ever the fire.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The cowl is formed of two triangular pieces, which are pivoted to the Frame of the grate, as seen at a. They are marked in drawing A and B. C is a spring, which governs the motion of the parts. When they are drawn forward, as seen in fig. 3, B is stopped, as seen, while A is drawn down, until it is stopped by the little lip and catch seen at e. When in this position they serve as a blower to the fire, to increase the draught when necessary, and, what is of quite as much importance, the light ashes and dust which usually escape from the fire when it is stirred, and fly about the room and settle on the furniture, are drawn up chimney.
It is apparent that this arrangement is adapted to all open fireplaces, whether the fuel used be coal or not; consequently I do not confine my improvement and claim to the coalgrate alone. The advantages of this arrangement are many, and must be obvious to all who use the coal-grate or open fireplace.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cowl, constructed as described, consisting of the triangular pieces A B, pivoted together upon a common pivot at a, the part A fitting into the part B, and the latter into the chimney, and controlled by the springs C,
substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
W. '1. FOSTER.
