Description
'JOSEPH BRIDGHAM.
- Dampers for Fire-Places.
No. 126,927, Patented May 21,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOSEPH BRIDGHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN D'AMP ERS FOR FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,927, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Damper for-Fire-Places, invented by JOSEPH BRIDGHAM, of the city, county, and State. of New York.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a grate, showing the supports for my improved damper for fire-places. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the device, showing it entirely of metal or of stone, with metal ends, respectively. L
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new damper for fireplaces, to beused in chimneys above grates for regulating the draught. The invention consists in providing the damper with projecting pivot-pins and stops at the ends and in the use of metallic sockets for its support built into the wall.
The advantages of this, arrangement are, first, that the damper can be swung open or closed with greater ease than heretofore, as it is properly pivoted in reliable supports; second, that the cheeks and the lire-back are not wornby the motion of the damper; and third,
that the latter cannot fall out of its own accord, though it can be removed when desired.
A in the drawing represents the damper. When made of metal, as in Fig. 2, it is provided with projecting pivot-pinsaa at the ends .near thelower edge, as shown, and also with a backwardly-projecting pin, c, at or near the middle. The pins a are, when the damper is in position, fitted into sockets B, which are built into the ends of the fire-place back of the cheeks d of the same, as indicated in Fig. 1. Every socket B has a downwardly-projecting lip, 0, whereby its firm hold in the fire-place is insured. The damperAis, after the sockets have been built into the wall, so applied thereto, that the pins a rest in the sockets, and constitute the pivots of the damper. The ears I) rest against the cheeks d when the damper is closed, and prevent the same from falling forward. The projection c, at the back of the dam per preven ts it from fallin g flat when swun g back, and facilitates the application of devices for swinging it forward again.
When the damper is made of stone it is provided with metal caps 0 O at the ends, which have the projecting-pinsaand ears b,the same as the metallic damper for the same purpose, and as shown in Fig. 3. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by, Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the damper A, provided with side-pins a a, rear pin 0, and lugs b b, to adapt it to use in the manner set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, the socket B, having the lip e adapted to be used in the manner and for the purpose described.
J OSE'PH, BRIDGHAM.
