FIREPLACE.
To allay/tom airway-concern:
Be it: known thatv I, SIMEON S. CUDD, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county. of- Union, State of South Carolina, have invented a new. and useful; Fireplace; andv I: do hereby declare the following to be a: full, clear, andl exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention-1v relates. to an improved open fire place, particularly of: the kind having an open grate, and a swinging damper for controlling-the flue.
A further object of the invention is the provisionofan improved'damper for the flue of the fire place, in combination with an improved frame in which the damper is mounted, said frame being detachably mounted in said flue, whereby the front metallic arch frame may be held adjacent the open fire place, as shown clearly.
A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means for fastening the metallic arch frame which surrounds the open fire-place.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a View in perspective of the improved open fire place constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the frame for pivotally supporting the damper of the fiue.
Referring more especially to the drawings; 1 designates an open fire-place, comprising the back wall 2, the hearth 3 and the smoke flue 4. Adjacent the fire place 1 is a metallic frame 5, constructed of any suitable sheet metal, and is rectangular as shown. The upper part or the arch portion of the opening 6 of said frame has an integral sheet metal hood 7. The lower adjacent edges of the opening 6 of said frame is provided with lugs 8, and an open fire grate 9 is provided. This open fire grate 9 Patented Apr. 9,1918.
Application filed October-12, 1917; Serial No. 1963159.
is angular in cross section as shown, and comprises the vertical frame; 10- and the grate bar frame 11. The vertical front frame 10 is provided with inwardly and downwardly extending hooks 12,- which overengage the lugs 8, thereby holding the open fire grate in place. The upper opposite edge portions of the opening 6 of the sheet metal frame 5 are provided with lugs 13, and: fitting the upper part ofthe fire placel and partly into the flue 4 is a frame 14. This frame has aninclinedtopwall 15, and isopen frontand' back. The forward edge portion of the sides 16 of said frame 14 are provided with L-shaped slots 17 which are designed to engage the lugs 13 of the upper part of the opening 6. The lower rear edge of the bottom of the frame 14 engages a notch 18 in the upper part of the wall 2 of the open fire place thereby assisting in holding the frame 14 in place. The upper rear part of the frame 14 engages the top wall of the fine 4, as shown at 19, thereby preventing the frame 14 from tilting forwardly. The upper parts of the forward edges of the sides of the frame 14 have cutaway portions 20, and the forward edge portions of said frame 14 fit within the upper part of the opening 6 adjacent the hood 7. Since tiie cutaway portions 20 are provided, it is to be noted that the frame 14 may be moved upwardly and tilted rearwardly, so as to disconnect it from the sheet metal frame 5 when it is desired to dismantle the structure of the open fire place and the flue. A suitable plate damper 21 is provided. This damper has its pintles 22 pivoted in suitable bearings of the side walls of the frame 14, whereby the upper edge of the plate damper may contact with the inner surface of the top wall 15 of the frame 14 as shown at 23, when the damper is closed, thereby limiting the damper in po sition. Pivoted between the lugs 24 of the front face of the damper is a threaded rod 25, which passes through an opening or slot 26 of the top wall 15 of the frame 14. This rod also passes through an opening 27 in the upper part of the frame 5 and has threaded thereto a wing nut 28. One end of this wing nut engages a countersunk portion adjacent the opening 27 and by adjusting the nut in one direction or the other the damper 21 may be closed or opened. By means of the L-shaped slots 17 and the lugs 13 and the engagement of the frame 141 with the top wall of the fiue as shown at 19, and the engagement of the rear lower edge of the frame 14 in the notch 18, the frames 5 and 14 are held in place.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:- 1. In a fire place having a fiue at its upper part, a front arch frame for the fire place, and a frame in said flue and provided with L-shaped slots, the opposite side edges of the arch opening of the arch frame having pins engaging said L-shaped slots, to hold the two frames in place.
2. In a fire place having a flue at its upper part, a front arch. frame for the fire place, a frame in said flue and provided with L-shaped slots, the opposite side edges of the arch opening of the arch frame having pins engaging said L-shaped slots to hold the two frames in place, and a plate damper pivoted in the lower part of the frame of the flue and having its upper edge engaging thev top wall of said frame, and means comprising a pivoted screw and wing nut for adjusting said plate damper.
3. In an open fire place having a flue at its upper portion, a sheet metal arch frame engaging the marginal edge part of the fire place and provided with a forwardly and downwardly extending hood, a second sheet metal frame arranged in the flue at the top of the fire place, the upper part of the rear wall of the fire place having a notch to be engaged by the lower rear edge of the second frame, the upper rear portion of the second frame engaging the top wall of said flue, means detachably connecting the two frames to hold them detachably in place, a
damper in the second frame, and means for adjusting said damper.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
