, UNITED VSTATES PATENT OFFICE. i
GEORGE C. MAXWELL, OF ALLENPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION formingv part of Letters Patent No. 268,256, dated Novel-nicer` 28, 1882. Application filed September 15, 1882,. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. MAXWELL, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Allenport, in theconnty of Washington and State. of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked there- Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a perspective View ot'a lire-place with my invention attached; Fig. 2, a top plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation from the rear. i
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of y re-placegrates provided with hinged or sliding guards or fenders; and the object thereof is to improve the construction of this class of attachments to the grate, whereby the heated coals may be kept from falling out and setting tire to the premises, and adapting such guards or fenders for connection to any fire-place, and so that they will perfectly operate when being opened or closed. These .objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary fire-place grate, havin gthe usual top bar, a, said grate being set in the usual {ire-place front, B. Upon the back of this fire-place front, at each side, are suitable brackets, C, having guideanges b, in which slide the guards or fenders D, said guards or fenders also sliding on supports c of plates E, projecting from the back of the said lire place front. These guards or fenders D are arranged on the same vertical plane with and forming an extension of the grate when drawn out for use, and are provided with feet d, which fit over and upon the top bar, a, of the grate A to admit of their being pushed to or from the center thereof, and wiih stops e to prevent them from being drawn too far out, said stops coming against the brackets C when the guards or fenders have reached the center of the grate. The feet d upon the guards or fenders D also act as stops to prevent them from being pushed too lar back, said feet coming againstthe sides ofthe fireplace front B. The guards or fenders D are also providedA with lipsf, so that they may he readily drawn ont with a poker or other fire-place implement engaging therewith. The guards 01 fenders maybe readily attached to any [ire-place grate, whether straight o'rcurved, and by cutting a recess in the jamhof the tireplace can be slid back out ot' sight when not in use, and as readily brought forward when desired. Either of the guards or fenders may be used independently ot' the other, as they are designed to come only to the center ot' the grate when drawn out.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe combination, with an open grate and re place having upon its interior side suitable brackets, U, provided with guide-anges b. and the plates E, of the sliding open guards or fenders D, having feet d, adapted to rest over and upon the upper or top bar ot' the grate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE C. MAXWELL.
