UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BUNFORD SAMUEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GRATE FOR FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,356, dated April 6, 1880.
Application filed January 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. BUNFORD SAMUEL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates for Fire-Places, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 of drawings is a front elevation, partly broken away; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation through line a; a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the fire-place, showing a top view of the grate on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through line y 3 of Fig. 1, and showing the grate arranged for a wood fire.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish grates for fire-places so constructed that the top bar of the grate may be adjusted to serve as andirons when a wood fire is to be used.
The invention consists in constructing the top bar of the grate in two parts, pivoted near their adjacent ends to the grate, so that they can be swung around to serve as andirons, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a fire-place. B is a grate,
which is secured in place in the usual way. 0
is the top bar of the grate, which is made separate and in two parts. The parts of the bar 0, at a little distance from their adjacent ends, are connected with the grate B bypivots D, so that their outer ends may be swung into the fire-place A, to adapt. them to serve as andirons for supporting wood when using a Wood fire.
When the parts of the bar 0 are swung inward their inner ends may rest upon a projection of the back wall of the fire-place.
The adjacent ends of the parts of the bar 0 may be made heavy to balance the other ends of the said parts, and may he ornamented to any desired extent.
I Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,
The grate B, constructed as herein shown and described, with its top 0 made in two parts, pivoted near their adjacent ends, whereby the parts of the bar 0 can he swung around to serve as andirons, as set forth.
JOSEPH BUNFORD SAMUEL.
