IMPROVEM ENT IN WOOD H EATlNG-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,446, dated January 22, 1878; application filed August 31, 1877.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, SHERMAN S. JEWETT, of the city of Buffalo, in. the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Wood Heating-Stoves, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section from front to rear. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section above the top of the detachable flue-plate, the bottom flue-strips being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a view of the removable plate, showing its rear surface, the hooks thereon, and the lip at the bottom.

The downward-flue heating-stove for wood, from its construction, necessitates the action of the flame from the fuel upon both sides of the plate forming the rear of the fire-chamber; and to protect the same from the effects of the heat, I construct an adjustable back fire-plate, G, as shown by the dotted lines a a in Fig. 1, and by the drawings, Figs. 2 and 3, furnished with the hooks A, which hang onto the catches B and are secured at the-bottom by the lip O. The protection afforded by the aid of the adjustable fire-back prevents the burning out of the plate E, forming the rear of the fire-chamber, and when the fire-back is rendered use less it can be easily replaced by a new one.- This adjustable plate also forms the front Wall of the flue D, so that it receives the most intense action of the flame; whereas if the rear plate E were constructed in one piece with the flue-hole F, as shown above the dotted lines a 0, even if protected with a fire-plate, the action of the heat would soon cause it to crack, which would necessitate the dismounting of the whole stove in order to remove the damaged plate.

I do not confine myself to any particular system of flues, as my invention is equally important to any system of flues.

I do not claim, broadly, the fire-back.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The detachable back fire-plate (l, a portion of which forms the front wall of the rear flue or flues, in combination with the interior back plate E, in connection with a divingflue heating-stove, substantially as and for the purposes herein described and shown.
