IMPROVEMENT IN IRON MANTELS FOR FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,903, dated October 9, 1877; application filed June 22, 1877.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS SGANTLIN, JAlvrEs M. ScANTLIN, and TnoMAs E. SoANT- LIN, of the city of Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Mantels for Fire-Places, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a front or edge view of the mantel-shelf removed from its proper attachment to the main part of the mantel; Fig. 3, sections through line X X of Fig. 1, showing the grate and grate-frame. Fig. 4 is a section through the same line, but with the grate-frame removed. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the grate.
The object of our invention is so to construct an iron mantel for a fire-place,first, that the mantel may be set in its place with its shelf removed, and to permit the shelf to be afterward affixed without disturbing the position of the mantel; second, that blowers may be affixed and secreted behind its shell when they are not needed; and, third, that the grateframe may be removed for the purpose of reenameling it, or other purpose, without in any manner interfering with or disturbing the grate or the burning of the fire.
Our mantel consists of the following parts, to wit: the shelf A, the front B, the grateframe E, and blowers F. Each of these parts, excepting the front B, may be removed for repairs or reornamentation without disturbing the grate or stopping the fire. The screws 0 unite the shelf to the front, and the screw D unites the grate-frame'E to the front B. The sliding blowers are shown at F and F, and they slide in the groove J, Fig. 5. G is the grate. O O is a recess at the back and sides of the fire-box and in rear of the mantel-front. 19 p is a recess formed byadepression of front B, covered by the grate-flame. d d are little bars extending across this recess, on which the grate-frame E is hooked bymeans of hooks f and f. The hooks h h support the grate.
g g g are lugs under the mantelshelf, by which the screws secure it to the front. i i are supports for the grate affixed to the front B, by which the grate is mainly held in its place.
1. The mantel-shelf A, provided with the lugs g g g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The front B, with its depression forming the recess 1) p, and provided with the supports d 01 within said recess for supporting the grateframe, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The front B, with its depression forming the recess 19 p and a cavity, by placing over said recess the grateframe E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The front B, with its supports 2' i, on which to hang the grate, when said front is constructed with a movable grate-frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. The front B, with its movable grate-frame E attached to said front, so that said grateframe may be removed at pleasure without interfering with the fire or grate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The front B, with its shelf A, having lugs g g, by which it may be attached to said front without moving the same after it has been set up, substantially as specified.
7 A fire-place mantel having a shelf that may be removed and replaced Without moving the mantel after it has been set up, a grateframe that may be removed without interfering with the grate or the burning of the fire, and sliding blowers, as and for the pinposes specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
