Letters Patent No. 67,415, dated August 6, 1867.
STOVE-PIPE DAMPEE.
E' @in Srlgchuh numb ts in tlgrse irttrts gmcut mit nmhmg glitt nf tlgc salme,
i Lo ALL wHoM I'r MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, EDWIN Cox and A.'W. POTTER, of Monroe, in the county of Green, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful improvement in Danipers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exrict description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sume` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
l This invention relates to am improvement in stove-pipe dempers, and has for its object the more eiectually regulating the amount ot' hciit-pussing into the flue, :1nd securing a more perfect draught. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side view oi' our improved damper, with the front part of' the stove pipe removed, showing the damper in place, partly open. I
Figure 2 is a top perspective view of our damper, with the `segments connected together and removed from the stove.
Similar letters of reference indicate -like parts. I A. is the stove pipe, the frontvpart removed. O O O are segments of our damper, fitting together when t closed in the form of a conical funnel, the diameter of' whose base is`nea.1'ly equal to that of the pipe A. K is i. collar or shoulder in the pipe A, on which the demper rests when the segments are'connected. 1L n are shoulderpieees fitted in cach segment, and bearing holes in which the vertical pins m m are borne, so as to slide easily up and down. The vertical pins m m connect the segments and keep them in place, and support the latter byA the nuts p 27, which rest on the shoulder-pieces n n., when the damper is liftedo' the collar K. The damper O is attached by the chain C to the long arm of the bent lever Gr, which is hinged to the cross-piece D by the bolt of the fulcruui B. The lever G carries a thumb-latch, L, of wood, or other suitable non-conducting material, i w and is held in place by the pins cl cl on the-but of the cross-piece D. The thumb-latch L has a. groove or slot, Z, iig. 2, to receive the pins d d, which rest on the bent arm of the lever G, when the damper is opened, and hold h the lever in place. 4
By releasing the thumb-latch Lfrom the pins d d, the long arm of the lever Gr,V carrying the conical segments O by the chain C, falls, and the shoulders n sliding down the pins m, the segments connect into one conical piece which falls until it rests upon the collar K. By increasing the number of pins d d the opening of the damper can he regulated as minut-ely as may be desired.
D What we claim ns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, issr 1. The shoulder-pieces and pins for connecting the segments ofea damper, substantially as shown and described.
2. The collar or shoulder K for supporting the damper, in combination with a. damper in divided segments, substantially as shown vand described. i
3. The thumb-latch attached to the end of the lever, for opening and closing the damper without bringing the hand of the operator in contact with heated metal, substantially as shown and described.
P 4. The mode of securing the thumb-latehand lever by means of pins, substantially as shown and described. y 5. Combination of parts forming our improved damper, substantially as shown and described.
` EDWIN COX,
A. W. POTTER.
i Witnesses:
S. M. ABBOTT, CAROLINE G. POTTER.
