Description
Jes-nrs W. BRANHAM, or FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 76,045, dated March 31, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAU(iHT-'RliGULAI'ORSl l dige Sdgehulr maar in in tipa @was tant :uit mating peut nf tlgt'stme.
TO ALL WHO-H IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it'known that I, JOSEPH W. BRANHAM, of Franklin, inthe county of Johnson, and State of Indiana, have invented a, new and improved Draught-Regulator; endl do hereby declare that the follow-ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable othersA skilled in the art to maire and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of vthis specification..
This invention relates to a new and 'improved -method of constructing dampers or draught-regulators-for furnaces, whereby the draught is more nicely regulated, and whereby they are more lire-proof. It consists of an iron frame, partly closed upon the`upper end'by sheet iron, provided with grooves in the side of said frame, in which a damper moves up and down. To said damper is pivoted a handle or lever, said lever being pivoted also to one side of said frame, by means of which said damper is moved, said damper being held in any position in its upward or downward movement by a pawl pivoted'to said frame, and fitting into teeth in said handle or lever. u l Y The drawing represcntsa front view of my invention.
A is the frame; B, the iron sheet, closing upper half of said frame A. Cis ametallic damper. L is the lever or handle by means of which damper is moved. a are hooks or buttons, by which frame A is secured to mouth of furnace. l) are handles, by which buttons a are turned. e is the pivot on the damper C, upon which lever L turns. fut is a pivot on'frarne A, upon which lever L turns. 1I is the handle of lever L, by means of wh-ich lever L is operated, and damper C raised. Z is a pawl, pivoted to frame A by pivot e', which, engaging in notches h, holds the lever L, and through the lever Lv the damper C, in any position. L are notches in lever L, in which pawl d falls. I y
The frame A is a square or oblong square metallic frame, the sides of which are provided wit-h grooves, in
which the damper C moves. About one-half of the upper portion of said frame A is closed by an iron sheet, B, 4over` which the damper C slides when the said damper C is being opened or moved upward. Upon said frame A, und passing through tho same, are hooks or buttons, ti, provided on the other side with handles, P, by means of which said buttons are turned, and by means of which said buttons a, said frame A is -held in or secured to thc mouth of a furnace or firehox. Upon the damper C, and near the upper edge of the same, is pivoted the lever L. Suid lever L is provided with a slot, through whichtis the pivot a', upon which said lever L turns, the object of sume being that the lever L may move freely in any position of the damper C, to which said lever is attached' by pivot e. Said lever L terminates in a handle, H, by the raising or lowering of which the damper C is either lowered or raised. n To an upper corner of theframe A is pivoted a. ,pawh ci, which engages in the teeth t of the lever L, thereby holding the damper C in any desired position, so as to admit more or less air to the lire in the furnace. A I
The operation is readily seen from the drawings.
'lhe advantages of. a damper or draught-regulator, constructed as above described, are, that by means of the same any desired quantity of air may be admitted to the tire, and bythe air being admitted to the fire from the bottom, the grate-bars are less liable to injury, and when closed at any time the danger from fire is greatly lessened. l
I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A 'lhe draught-regulator, constructed-as describedconsisting of theframe A, having the'sheet B and the damper C, to which the inner end of the notched lever L is pivoted, having its fulcrum upon the side of the frame A at a', said damper being held in any desired position by means ofthe pawl engaging with the notches I of the lever H, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH W. BRANHAM. Witnesses:
DANIEL WAIT Hows, SAMUEL I. OGLER.
