ISAAC L. FRANKEM, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA. Letters Patent No. 69,791, dated October 15, 1867; antedated September 14, 1867.
DAMPER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Isaac L. FRANKEM, of the city of Indianapolis, in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable improvement in Draught-Regulators for heaters, stoves, and furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing means whereby the draught of a heater, stove, or furnace in a cellar, basement, or lower story of a building may be accurately regulated in any upper story of such building. I Y
' To accomplish this object I construct a tube of iron, or other suitable material, in the form shown on Figure 1 of' the drawings, which said figure shows a sectional view thereof. The lower end of said tube is placedin the side of the heater, stove, or furnace, and the upper end extends to any upper story of the building I may desire. That portion of the tube which extends to the right, at a right angle with the main tube, is a conduit for the introduction of air. I sometimes extend this conduit through the wall of the building, so as to introduce the air from the outside thereof, and I prefer this mode to all others. This conduit is marked B, and themain tube is marked A on the drawings. At some point below said conduit, and in the main tube, I insert a cut-oil", marked 0. This cut-oifis usually made in the form represented on Figure 2, in which the red lines indicate the portion-to be moved, and the black lines those that remain stationary. Air is admitted through this cut-01f to the fire, or excluded therefrom by turning the movable part of the cut-off to the right or the left, as the case may be. In an upper story of the building, or in all the stories thereof respectively, I insert in said main tube another or a number of cut-oil's, corresponding in all respects to the one that is placed below the conduit, and being duplicates thereof. When more than two cut-oil's are used I leave the upper portion of the tube open on one side to enable me to reach and operate the intermediate cut-ofis, but when only two are used the tube may be'closed from the top to the ,bottom, except where the conduit is admitted. I connect these several cut-ofl's by a firm iron rod, marked D, which holds them together in such a manner that the whole must be moved together.
My device is operated as follows, namely: In any story of the building in which there is a cut-off, move the same either to the right or the left, as you may desire to admit or exclude the air at the fire, and it is regu-- lated accordingly. 'The lower cut-oil always stands precisely in the position of the one you move.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--:
A draught-regulator, having tube A, conduit B, rod D, and a series of cut-ofi's, as described, substantially as herein specified. I r
I. L. FRANKEM.
