Letters Patent'No. 65,630, dated June 11,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN- GHEGKING THE DRAUGHT IN FURNAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, J. C. BAGNALL, of the city and county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Checking the Draught of Furnaces andI do hereby declare that the following' is ra. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference 'bei-ng had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists.in admitting atmospheric air into the stack or chimney of puddling or reverberatory furnaces, used in treating metalliferous ores, by means of a door made in the stack or chimney above the reverheratory line of the furnace, in such a manner that the heat in the furnace can be regulated with the greatest accuracy, the inside brick-work of the stack or chimney is saved, and the damper, with itsl connections genen ally used to regulate thedraught, can be dispensed with.
i A represents a reverberatory furnace of any suitable construction, and provided with a fire-place, B, hearth C, and chimney or smokestack D. The heated gases and products of combustion emanating from there-place pass over. the hearth to the chimney or smoke-stack, through which they escape to the open atmosphere.
In ordinary furnaces of this class a damper is placed on the top of the chimney or smokestack for the purpose of regulating the draught, and this damper is operated by a lever and rod, which, being constantly exposed to the open atmosphere and to the heat of the escaping smokeand gases, are soon destroyed, and require constant repairs. In place of the damper I make a hole, a, in the side of 'the'smoke-stack, above lthe reverberatory line of the furnace. This hole I provide with a suitable door, b, so that it can b opened and closed at pleasure. By opening or closing the door, the draught in the furnace 'can be regulated with the greatest nicety, the damper and its connections can be dispensed with, the inside brick-work of the stack is saved, and a great saving is effected in keeping the furnacein repair.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a door, b, in the smoke-stack of areverberatory furnace, and above the reverberatory ltine thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JONAS C. BAGNALL.
