Description

@uiten tetes sttent @Hire WILLIAM STEVENS, Oli"v BLOOMINGTON, ILLNIS.
Letters Patent-No. 69,505, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PURNAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CGNCERN:
Be it known that I, WHLIAM STEVENS, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Device for Consuming the Smoke and Gas arising from Steam Boilers; and dol hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked'thereon, making n part of this specification.
In the annexed drawings, A A represent the two walls of a furnace or boiler, These walls are mafie of brick, in the ordinary manner, with suitable bearings for the boiler. B represents the doors at the fxiont of' the fire, while B represents the doors in front of the ash-pit. Extending from side to side of the wall, between the doors B and B', is a hollow tube, which is open ut bot-h ends. Opening into this tube is a series of small pipes, z't'z',w'l1ich are placed, one under each grate, and extend the whole length of the furnace, as seen in lig. 1. D represents a narrow chamber, formed at the rear end of the furnace, between the wallsCl, and into which the small tubes iopen. The top of this chamber hos a curved metal plate, G, with perforations :r x, :is seen in fig. 2. K represents a pipe, which opens into one side of this chamber, and which admits exhaust steam. The re is huilt uponthe grates, within the furnace, above the tubes z' z', and cold air passing into the tube, E, at both sides, is conducted into the pipes it', and heated in going through the said pipes, entering the chamber D. The steam from the pipe k, coming in upon the hot air in the chamber, passes up in jetsthrough the perforated plate G, and intersects the Home from the furnace :1t this point, and consumes the smoke and gas arising therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim ns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The tube E, and pipes e' i' e', arranged in the manner a-s specified, and used furthe purposes set forth.
2. The arrangement of the chamber D and perforated plate G, in combination with the tube E and pipes i1' e', in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have-hereunto set my hand this 21st day of' March, 1867.
WILLAM STEVENS.
