ADDISON C. FLETCHER, OF NEW YORK, N, Ye.
. Letters Patent No. 61,615, dated January 29, 1867.
dlp tlgehltle feierten iniu'tlgcse tttcts gnent int mating putt nf tige stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l l
Be it known that I, ADDISON C. FLETCHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement Vin Grate Bars; and I do hereby declare vthat thefollowing'is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference boing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciyiication, in Which- Figure 1is a side view of a grate bar with my improvement. Figure 2 is a longitudinal verticalsection of the same. Figure 3 is a plan of the same. .i Figure-4 is a verticalsection ofthe same. Y v Figure 5 is a vertical section ofthe fire-place of a cylinder boiler, illustmting the application of the grate bar. Figure 6 is.a vertical section, illustrating the application of thc invention to a cylinder stove.
Figure 7 is a vertical section illustrating the application of the inventionto 'an open fire-place for houses.'
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in an improvement in the step=formcd grate bar, which is the subject-matter of an application for Letters Patent, allowed January 3l, 1866, the object of such improvement being to increase the eliiciency and durability of' such a bar, or ofa grate formed of such bars.
The only parts'of the bar, the construction of which diii'ers in any essential respect from that of the bar represented and described in my above-*mentioned former application, are the transversely arranged Webs, 'a a,
' by which the severalsteps A A of the bar are connected. These wcbs, iinstcad 'of being vertical, are vsloping so as to give their faces an upward inclination, `as' shown in figs. 1 and 2, and they are faced with slabs of firebrick,.soapstone, or other refractory material, b 6. The faces of the said Webs a a may be perforated in any suitable manner, but I prefer to make them 'with horizontal slots,'e e, and grooves, d d, as shown in fig. 4, in which one of the facing slabs l is omitted to expose the web to-view. The facing slabs b Z7 have numerous perforations, g g, arranged in any suitable manner opposite to the slots and grooves of `the webs, and are secured to the said webs partly by half dove-tail flanges, c c, at the tops f the Webs, and partly by bolts, ff, passing through the slabs and webs and fitted with nuts at the, backs of thc webs. The perforations g and slots e e, are perpendicular to the faces of the slabs b 6 and webs a a, and hence, as the falcesof the said webs and slabs havean upward inclination, the jets of air admitted Athrough the said perforations are delivered in an oblique 'upward direction, whereby they are caused to'mix more intimately with' the combustible gases illuminated from the fuel on the steps A A, than when delivered in a horizontal direction, as they are through the perforations 'of the vertical webs, and hence a more perfeetcombustion of these gases is effected, 'and a greater length of flame is obtained by my improvement. 4The facing slabs of' refractory`- material protect the faces of the. webs a a from the intense heat of the fuel ,in contiguityto the'webs, and hence'render the grate bars less liable to burn out in those parts, and more-durable.
What I 'claim as my invention, aud-desire to secure by Letters'Paten is f 1.4 The arrangement of the connecting webs a, of the steps 1n a step-formed grate bar, in inclined or sloping positions, substantially as'and for the purpose herein described. v
2L The facing slabsb b, of refractory material, in Vcombination with the connecting Webs of the steps of a step-formed grate bar, substantially as and for 'the purpose herein specified.
ADDISON c'. FLETCHER.
