Description
. E. WHITEHURST.v
Fireplace Grate.
.Patented Feb. 1, 1870. I
N FETERS, PMOTO-LITHDGRAPNER, WASHvNGromJlL initrd tatra @anni @Mira y WILLIAM n. WHITEHURST, or NoRroLII, VIRGINIA.
13mm Patent No. 99,384, dated February 1, 1870; undated Jamiary 2o, 1ero.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may conce/rn.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WHrrEHURs'r, of the city of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented an Improved Dumping-Grate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the grate, with its parts in the position they occupy when the grate is filled.
Figure 2 is a vertical section, from front to rear, illustrating the two modes of dumping.
The same part is marked by the same letter of reference in both figures.
The nature ofthe invention consists in providing a coal-grate with two modes of dumping,.in one of' which `the bottom grating isdetached by its front edge from the upper grating, and opens in such a way as to throw the contents ofthe grate outward and forward, and in the other mode, the upper and lower gratings remain united, and turn on a pivot at their upper angles, into a position to project the contents of the grate toward the rear wall of the fire-place, as hereinafter set forth.
' In the accompanying drawings- A marks the frame of the grate;
B, the back of the fire-place;
C, the upper or front grating; and
D, the bottom grating.
The upper grating O is supported npon pins a a, projecting from the jambs ofthe lire-place, and received by hooks b b, at the upper angle of grating C.
The lower grating D is pivoted at its rear angles to the two end bars projecting downward and backward from the upper grating G.
It is supported in a horizontal position by means of a swinging hook, @,attaohed to the upper grating C.
This hook is operated by means of the handle on the end of bolt d).
When the handle c is in the pendent position shown in the drawings, the hook e engages,.andholds the upper front bar of grating D. When this handle is turned to a horizontal position, the hook e is released, and' being drawn outward, lets down `the front of the lower grating D.
The upper grating O is held in place by bolts q g, operated by buttons f j, sliding in slots in the plates di.
Studs h h, projecting from the jambs of the fireplace, support the vertical bars of grating C, at the rear.
To dump the entire grate, bringing it into the position shown in red dotted lines in g.2, it is only necessary to withdraw the bolts g g, and pull the lower portion ofthe grat-e forward.
Todump the lower grating D, release it from the hook e, and it falls of its own gravity into the position shown in blue dotted lines in iig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A grate, constructed as described, and having the two methods of dumping specified. y
The above specification of my saidinvention,signed and witnessed at Norfolk, Virginia, this 30th day of April, A. D. 1869. l
WILLIAM E. WH1TEHURST.
