No. 113,757 Patented April 18, I871.

Letters Patent No. 113,757, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE GRATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GARRETT, of Oannonsburg, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Fender and sifting Attachment to Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an attachment to firegrates for catching the droppings from the grate, sifting the ashes therefrom, and also for preventing fire from falling over the top'of the grate; and
It consists in a metal pan or screen of any kind, suspended under the grate, by resting at the rear on studs projecting from the back wall, and at the front by chains from the top bars of the grate, or on studs in the wall thereabout, so that it may be swung backand forth for sifting the cinders, and then he brought forward and its contents emptied on the fire and used as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation through the back and front wall, and the grate, and
Figure 2 is a plan of the sifter and fender.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the rear wall;
B, the grate;
G, the hearth; and
I) is a sifter, made of metal bars or perforated sheet metal, in any way as preferred, and suited in size and form to the grate for which it is intended.
It is provided with hooks E at, the rear, suited for hooking on the second bar of the grate from the top, so that by raising the front side of sifter and fastening at the top H, it becomes a fender, to prevent fire from falling from the top of the grate.
It is supported at the rear on pins or studs F, projecting from the rear wall, and at the front, while under the grate, by chains G, from the top bar of the rate. g The cinders being received in it, a handle, I, of any kind may be applied, or tongs, by which to shake it for discharging the ashes, after which it may he swung forward and emptied on the fire, and returned to its place.
On retiring at night, or on leaving the room, it
may be fastened perpendicularly on the top part of the grate, as shown in fig. 1, thus forming a perfect safeguard against danger from fire falling from. above the grate.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a fire-grate, B, of a sifter and fender, D, suspended under the-grate by chains at the front and studs at, the rear, and arranged for being supported perpendicularly by setting its hooks on one of the upper bars of grate and fastening it at the top by hook, staple, or otherwise, the whole substantially as in the manner described.
WILLIAM H. GARRETT.
