UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
EDWIN W. POOLE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC ASH-SIFTER FOR COAL-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 438,176, dated October 14, 1890. Application filed January 31, 1890. Serial No. 338,820. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN WV. POOLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Ash-Sifters for Coal Stoves or Furnaces; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic ash-Sifters; and its object is to facilitate the removal of the cinders and unburned coal fragments from the ash while in the furnace, and in such a manner as to avoid the employment of an exterior screen and the dust and annoyance occasioned thereby.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts, as shown in the drawings, described herein, and more specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a form of the device in longitudinal section and its situation underneath the firegrate of a furnace. Fig. 2 shows a detail of the sitter detached.
In the drawings, A represents the sifter, B the grate, and O the ash-pan. a a are hangers depending from the grate to support the sifter, which would be used when there is no ash-pan employed under the grate. The front hanger a may be made detachable by means of the hook a and pin a and the sitter-body made to pivot on the ends a of the rear hangers, so as to let down the front andjdump the contents, which may then be used again in the stove.
Usually in sifting the ashes from under a fire-grate it is necessary first to remove themand then throw them by hand against a screen to separate the cinders and small pieces of coal from the powdered ash, which is an exceedingly troublesome and dirty process; but by the use of the invention just described the ashes are sifted out in the passage to the pan, leaving the particles of coal in a position where they are readily accessible, and the dust passes out through the lines arranged in furnaces for that purpose.
I do not claim the exact shape, size, or manner of supporting the sitter, nor the precise construction or arrangement of parts shown or described; but
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a furnace, a fire-grate, an ash-sitter underneath the grate, rods for supporting the sitter, and means for detaching one end of the sifter when discharging its contents, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the fire-grate of a stove or furnace, an ash-sifter located vertically underneath the same, rods supporting the rear portion of the sifter from the grate, and detachable means for supporting the front portion of the sitter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWIN W. POOLE.
