Description

G. CHILSON.
STOVE GRATB No..'79,312. Patented June 30,.1868
GARDNER GHIL'SON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lettera Patent No.'79,312, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
@te rlgehul reirme tu im tlgrsc man @und mit mating pm ai the same.
TO AEL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY SOME:
Beit known that I, GARDNER CHILSON, nf Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gratos for Stoves; and I do hereby declaro the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a topv view,
Figure 2 a side elevation,
Figure 3 an end view,
Figure 4 a' longitudinal section, and
Figure 5 a transverse se'ction of my improved grate.
The said grate is rectangular in its general form, and composed of a frame, a, and a series of cross-bars, b b Snc., the latter having open spaces c c c, de., between them, and being parallel to each other and to the ends of the frame.
This grate is arched both longitudinally and transversely, in manner as represented in the drawings. Each side bar, besides being crowned on its top surface, is deeper at its middle than it is at its ends, the same imparting to it the trussfortn, as shown in the drawings. I
Furthermore, there are journals d d projecting from the'middlcs of the end bars of tl' e frame; and there s also a bent arm, e, having an elbow on it, as shown ntf, extended downward from one of the side bars of the frame, and between one of the journals and one of the side bars of the frame. This arm has a hole, g, made through its lower part to receive the hook h ofla hooked rod or bar, having the form as shown in side view in iig. 6. This rod or bar is intended` to go through a hole in one ofthe front plates of therepla'ce in 'which the grate is to` be used. The rod or bar has a notch, z', to catch en the edge ofthe hole, such beingl for the purpose of holding' the grate horizontal when it may be in use.
By raising the notch out of connection with the plate, the grate may be shaken by the rod, or turned so` as.
to discharge coals into the ash-pit or chamber that may be below it.
The elbow on the arm is to carry the arm out of the way of the drawer or ash-pan usually introduced into the ash-chamber. v
I am aware that a circular grate provided with .journals has had. an arm extended dowrifrom its centre, such arm being to receive a rod, and to aid in enabling a person either to turn or shake the grate, as occasion may require. I therefore make no claim to' such. When at the centre, the arm is liable to get more or less buried in the ashes of the ash-chamber, orto be clogged thereby, but when arranged at the end of the grate, and particularly when provided with a bend or elbow to cause it to extend horizontally beyond such end, and the end of the ash-drawer, it will be out of the way of the ashes which may fall through the grate, and cannot be interfered with by such. When the arm extends down from tho centre of the grate, such arm is in the wayrof an ash-drawer, or prevents such from being usedin the ashchamber, as in suoli case the drawer cannot be moved intro and out of place, as thenarm will be an obstruction thereto. Furthermore, by arranging the arm eceentrically with respect to the axis of the'grate, in the mannerv represented, I-"am enabled to increase the leverage exerted by it on the grate beyond what it; would be were the arm to extend down from the axis of the grate.
The peculiar arching ofthe grate, and the truss-form of its side bars, renders it very strong, audnot liable to sag in the middle when over-heatedA er heated to redness. i
I claim the square or rectangulargra-tc as arched or curved both longitudinally and laterally, and having it; side bars trussed or made deeper at their mddles than at their ends, as represented.
I also claim the combination and arrangement of the elbow of the grate-arm, with such arm and the gratol constructed and disposed relatively to each other substantially as specific'J l GARDNER CHILSON.
