Description
SELENA C. EWING. Improvement in- Division-Plates for Cooking-Stoves.
Patented May 2,1871.
hated new.
SELENA EWING, OF HILLS FERRY, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent Lid 114,428, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIVISION-PLATES FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: r
. Be it known that I, SELENA (l. EWING, ot Hills Ferry, county of Stanislaus, State of California,
have invented an Adjustable Partition for Stoves;-
and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appeitains to make and" use my said "invention or improvements without further in ention or experiment.
My invention relates to partitions-to be employed more particularly in cooking-stoves, but applicable also to all other kinds of stoves; and
It consists in the employment of a plate of metal, made to fit in the fire-place and top chamber of the stove, which can be moved back and forth. across the fire-place in order to diminish the size of the fire-place when desired, in order to economize fuel.
In order to illustrate my invention as clearly as pos-.
sible, reference is bad to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents a cook-stove or, range of any desired pattern.
The adjustable partition B may be made of sheet or cast-iron,- and so constructed as to fit across the tire-place C and upper chamber D over the oven of the store.
This partition can be secured by means of lugs traveling in slides in the permanent front and back of the stove, or by other equivalent device, or it may be simply placed inside of the stove without any particulari'astening.
When not required for diminishing the size of the fireplace this partition may be kept up close against the side of the stove, opposite the door which opens into the fire-place, as shown at fig. 2, thusmaking a false back to the fire-place, or, in other words, a double side to the stove.
When it is desired to employ onlytwo of the holes of the stove this partition B can be moved to the middle of the stove so as to cut oil one-half of the fire-place and. draught, thus confining the heat to one side of, the stove, and requiring but little fuel to produce the required amount of heat.
In order to readily accomplish theadjustment of the partition I make two'holes, 0, through the side f of the stove, one at each end. Upon the adjustable par- -tition I secure or form loops or staples, g, or other catch, in line with the holes 6. Two rods, h, each having a hooked end, are then thrust through the holes e and hooked into the catches g,by which the partition can be then readily moved to any position desired.
By the employment of this adjustable partition :1.
great saving in fuel can be had, especially during the summer months when it is not desired toheat the entire stove for cooking purposes.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Pat-.
cut, is a 1. The adjustable partition B, substantially as and for the purpose above described. z 2. In combination with the adjustable partition B the hooked rods h, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is 1 claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
SELENA O. EWING. [L. s.] Witnesses:
G. E. BLAKE, J. M. HAWIJEY.
