IMPROVEMENT IN HEARTH-PLATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,574., dated July 28, 1874; application filed June 17, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RUFUS J. KING, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hearth-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to that class of stoves in which the draft is regulated by means of the hearth-plate; and consists, substantially, of a hearth-plate hinged on a lateral pivot, which is free to slide backward and forward in a slot, and swing around upon its hinge, when desired. 7

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an ordinary cooking-stove provided with my improved hearth-plate. Fig. 2 represents the stove hearth with the plate turned on its pivot to allow free access to the ash-pit. Fig. 3 represents the plate detached to show its pivot and the slot in the hearth beneath in which it works.

My improvement provides the means of swinging the hearth-plate out of the way, so as to give access to the ash-pit, and also admits of the plate being uniformly drawn out to any desired extent to regulate the draft. The swinging action may be availed of when the hearth is drawn out.

In the aceompanyin g drawings, A represents my improved hearth-plate, which is of the ordinary shape, but has a lateral projection, B, to the under side of which is cast or otherwise fastened a pivot, 0, having a catch or detent near its lower end. The function of the latter is to hold the plate securely upon the hearth when it is swung around upon its pivot, as denoted in Fig. 2. The slot D, in which the pivot 0 works, is made through the hearth at the side of the ash-pit.

This slot may be of any desired length, but

of a width just suflicient to allow the introduction of the pivot G. The projection on pivot G will only enter the slot when the plate A is in a position parallel with the front of the stove, as in Fig. 1. When the plate Ais turned upon its pivot O, the detent works under the hearth, and holds the plate securely.

The advantages to be gained by my invention, as above indicated, are twofold, viz: A uniform draft can be obtained by sliding the plate outward, which could not be done were it simply hinged without being capable of sliding, and the plate is free to be turned so as to completely expose the ash-pit, and at the same time it will be securely held fast to the hearth, thus avoiding the necessity of handling and removing it.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pivoted sliding hearth-plate A, in combination with the slotted hearth, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
