Description

(No Model.)
G. B. BOYNTON.
SHAKING GRATE.
Patented June 5,1883.
NY PETERS, Phob-Uiho npher. Washington. 0 c
Y ATEN rricE,
CHARLES E. BOYNTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' SHAKINGQ-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,864, dated June 5, 1883. Application filed March 8,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. BOYNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New York, in the State of ,New York, have invented certain new and bar and rods and, in dotted lines, the ash-pit below and the furnace or stove above.
Heretofore in this class of manufacture it has been customary to provide in the lower parts of stoves and furnaces a dumping-grate which, when operated, would often destroy the fire above by letting fall a greater quantity of the live coals than was desirable.
It is the object of my invention to obviate this difficulty; and my improvements relate to a furnace-grate consisting of a main shaking-grat'e, provided with a supplemental grate pivoted to and beneath the said main grate, which supplemental grate is capable of horizontal motion to discharge any clinkers that may accumulate thereon; and the invention further consists in so pivoting the supplemental dumping-grate beneath the main or shaking grate as that it shall shake therewith to clear the fire. Another disadvantage I seek to overcome is the necessity for opening the doors of the ash-pit to procure access to the dumping arrangement, and allowing the dust and ashes to escape into the room. 7
In the drawings, A represents the main grate, supplied with projections resting upon an annular flange of the body of the furnace, (the furnace being shown in dotted lines,) and capable of a horizontal shaking movement to discharge the ashes, such movement being communicated to the grate bymeans of lever B, having a handle, B. The lever B is pivoted at E, and is riveted to or cast with a downwardly-projecting arm, b, moving upon an annular shoulder, s, of the ash-pit. r 0 connect the lever B to the niain grate, the whole forming a rigid shaking attachmentv adapted to operate entirely outside of the furnace or stove.
The above-mentioned annular flange is provided with legs f, having feet bearing in hollow lugs or projections cast on the inside of and in one with the ash-pit. The latter is also shown in dotted lines. I
Pivoted directly to and beneath the main grate at 0, so that its upper surface will be in close relation to the bars of the grate A, is asupplemental grate, C. To the said supplemental grate is connected a rod, D, so arranged as to move freely with the grates when they are shaken simultaneously to relieve them of ashes and to slide the supplemental grate forward, as indicated in'dotted lines in Fig. 1, when it is 'operated separately, leaving the unburned cinders and coal undisturbed within the grate, and allowing the clinkers acculnulated in the middle of the grate to drop into the ash-pit. By this arrangement the shaking operation may be carried on outside without opening the doors of the furnace or stove, confining all dust or ashes within the apparatus. The supplemental grate may also be constructed so as to swing to the rear by means of a projected arm beyond the pivotal point.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new thereinand desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a furnace or stove grate, a projecting bar and handle, pivoted as described, provided with rods, as described, forming a rigid shaking arrangement upon the outside of the furnace or stove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a furnace or stove grate, a shaking bar and rods, the said bar being pivoted at E, as described, and arranged to move upon a shoulder above the ash-pit, and the rods rigidly attached to a shaking-grate, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. a .l
3. A shaking grate bar for furnaces or Rods stoves, having a supplemental grate pivoted supplemental grate pivoted to its under side thereto, in combination with a shaking bar and provided with an operating-rod substanand rods, rigidly attached to said shakingtially as set forth.
grate, and so arranged as to shake outside of CHARLES B. BOYNTON. 5 the base or front of the furnace or stove. Vitnesses:
4. In combination with the shaking-grate, JEREMIAH J. RICHARDSON, having a shaking attachment, as described, a JosEPH WODELL.
