IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.

'the fire-place, and which is provided with a grated door; there are also two other openings having sliding doors, the-purpose of which is hereinafter described.

A, figs. 1 and 2, represents an arch, and
B is a back-plate, curved forward to the top and front of the arch, the whole cast in one piece.
Central and near the top of the back is a large opening, 0, which forms the throat, and which is provided, with'a grated door, D, hinged at the lower side, and which opens backward, the hinges being so arranged that the door will only open a sufficient distance, and stand as seen in fig. 3, so that it may be readily closed. The grating in the door may also be closed.
In the lower corners of the back are openings, E E, which'are covered with sliding doors F This arch is set in the brick-work of the fire-place, the front edge coming out flush with the front, and meets the grate-front or mantel, the basket of the grate being just below the bottom of the arch.
The advantages derived from this mode of constructing a fire-place .arch is, that draught is completely controlled and can be graduated to any required degree by the openings. It also saves all the heat and deflects it into the room. It is also found that, by opening the slides E E, the draught is sufficient to dispense with a blowerin front of the grate, as they are down so near the fire. Also, in the summer season, by closing all the openings no soot or dirt falls into the fire-place, to the great annoyance of the housewife.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is-- An arch, A, and back B, having openings 0 E E provided with doors D F F, all constructed and operating substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
