IMPROVEMENT IN GAGES FOR HAIR-CUTTING.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 8 1,904, dated September 5, 1876; application filed July 17, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LAFAYETTE '1. Bow and JOHN S. WILLIAMS, of Burksville, in the county of Cumberland and State of Kentucky,

have invented a Barbers Hair-Gage; and we A and B represent two ordinary combs of any suitable size, which are riveted or otherwise fastened to the end ofa flat spring, 0. This spring is bent in the center in double 8 form,

so as to make a handle, D, and leave the two combs directly one above the other, the tendency of the spring being to separate the combs. From the lower armof the springO extends a curved bar, D, through a slot or mortise in the upper arm of the spring. The bar D is perforated with a series of holes, and a pin, a, is passed through either one of the holes above the upper arm of the spring, to keep the combs just such a distance apart and no farther, though they can be compressed as desired.

With this device the hair can be cut any length desired by first placing the key in the proper place, and, before inserting the combs in the hair, pressing them together, and by so doing the top comb B will raise the hair when the pressure on the spring is removed. All the hairthatis above the top comb B is then cut, and the barber will so continue until the job is completed. v

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Two combs attached to the ends of a bent metal spring, to form a hair-gage, as herein set forth.

2. The combination of the two combs A B,

bent spring 0, forming the handle D, the per-' forated bar D, and pin or key a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
