Description
UNITED STATESPA'I'ENT OFFICE. l
LEWIS MILLER, 0F READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-BAND BENDER'S.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,135, dated July l, 1879; application iiled March 6, 1879. Y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALewis MILLER, of Reading, in the county of Berks, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Band Benders; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specit`lcation.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction andarrangement of a device for fastening the buckles of bale-bands, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I- will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the The body or frame of my machine is composed of two side plates, A A, with a block, B, placed between them at the upper outer corner, and the whole united by a bolt, C, asy
shown. y
Near the front edges of the plates A are made slots @extending from the bottom upward for a suitable distance. Back of tlns slot, near the bottom, between the two plates, is pivoted a hook, D, of substantially the form shown in Fig. 2. The inner end of this hook is formed with projecting journals b, which are inserted in holes in the plates A,and a lever or handle, E, is connected to or formed with said hook.
In the lower side of the block B is inserted and fastened a knife or cutter, d, and directly against this knife works a slide, F, in grooves e e in the side plates, A A. This slide has an opening, f, formed in it in its inner end.
In a groove in the back of the block B is pivoted an elbow-lever, G, the lower end of whichV enters a slot in the slide F, so as to move the slide out Yand in, as required.
rlhe operation of my device is as follows: My invention can be used with any bale-band buckle that has a slot in it for the passage of the bale-band. When the bale is pressed, and the upper end of the band drawn down at the front by any device for that purpose, and the buckle fastened thereto in the usual manner, the machine is placed over the buckle in such a manner that the slots a a of the side plates will pass over the sides of the buckle. The
lower end of the band is passed upward between the buckle and the hook D and through the opening fin the slide F, which' latter for this purpose is first thrown inward, and the band then drawn tight. By means of the lever G the slide F is drawn outward, whereby the band is pressed against the knife d and the end of the band cut oli'. B'y now raising the lever E the curved hook D is turned inward, carrying'A the end of. the band with it through the slot in the buckle, .and bending it around the end ofthe buckle, so as to fasten it firmly in place. The hook D is then thrown upward again, and the machine lifted oli' from the buckle.
This device is simple in construction and not liable to get out of order, and by its use the buckles may be fastened on the bale-bands very rapidly, and tighter than can be done by hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for fastening bale-band buckles, consisting, essentially, of a body or frame, a cutter for cutting off the end of the band, and abender for bending the end of the band through the slot in the buckle, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the body or frame A B, having slots a a, the curved hook D, with lever E, the knife d, and the slide F, formed with the slot f, and operated by a lever, G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this .lst day of March, 1879.
' LEwIs MILLER.
Witnesses J. RosENFIELD, I. ROVENBERG.
