Description

' J. S. WHITE.
Toilet-Case.
No. 213,478 Patented Mar. 18, 1879.
WM mw WITNESSES= INVENTO= .Q/1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. WHITE, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOILET-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,478, dated March 18, 1879 application filed December 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WHITE, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Toilet-Sets; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable .ot-hers skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to. letters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view. showing the back side of the hair-brush and the plate or back piece, to which its bristles are attached. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the comb and the joint at which the tooth-brush is attached. Fig. 3 is a side view, with the tooth-brush turned back by the side of the comb.
The purpose of my invention is to produce a toilet-set composed of a hair-brush,tootl1- brush, and comb, so combined and arranged that the same can be packed or placed together for carrying in. a very small compass, and can also be sufficient-1 y separated or opened apart for separate use.
Upon a late or back piece, a, I unite and combine the hair-brush, tooth-brush, and comb, in manner substantially as follows: I construct a helical wire brush, which I attach by any well-known method to the lower side of the plate a or its equivalent. On the opposite side of said plate I attach the comb b by means of the metal clamps or holders 0, or any other equivalent means.
The brush is thus of semicircular, or nearly semicircular, form, which enables it to be packed in a small case, which may also be cylindrical in shape. Attached to the plate a is the tooth-brush d. This is so attached as to bend back or slide in upon the back of the plate a. As shown in the drawings, two sides or lips, e c, are formed or turned up on one end of the plate a. The end of the handle of the tooth-brush is placed between these two lips e e, and a pivot is passed through the two lips and through the handle of the tooth-brush, so that the tooth-brush is capable of being placed in the position shown either in Fig. 2 or Fig. 3. The tooth-brush maybe so arranged, however, as to slide instead of turning in and out, if desired. A slot in the handle of the tooth-brush will allowit to slide in and out on a pivot. A spring, f, working and pressing against a shoulder, g, on the tooth-brush handle, holds the tooth-brush in its place, either when opened out for use or when closed back upon the plate a. p
The whole device may be inclosed in a small case, and can be carried in the pocket.
A small cap of linen or rubber cloth, &c., may be slipped over the tooth-brush to keep it clean.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the plate a, of the hair-brush, as described, the comb b, clamps c, and the hinged tooth-brush d, substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. WHITE.
