object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bristles may be inclosed when the brush is not in use.

Another object of the invention is to make the brush head in the form of a boX and to pivot the brushes therein so they may be moved to project from the box or to lie within the same.

A. further object of the invention is to secure the bristles in a series of frames and l to pivot these frames within the box, and to provide a cover for closing the bristles in the brush head. y

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in its construction, re-` liable and. eflicient 1n operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.

'lhe invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reterence will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

In these ligures 1 indicates the brush head made in the form of an oblong casing and having its bottom and one end open. 'llhe top of the casing at the open end is provided with lugs 2 forming a bearing for a pin 3 which acts as a hinge for the end cover 4:, for closing the end of the casing. A pin 5 is carried at the lower end of this cover and this pin acts as a hinge for the cover 6 for the.` casing. This cover is provided with spring catches 7 engaging with projections 8 on the side plates 9 ofthe` casing to hold the cover closed. These catches are disengaged from the projections by means of the spring tongues l0 provided inthe sides of the casing and being similar' to the buttons used in folding cameras. `'llhe casing and cover are covered with leather 11 or other suitable material and these buttonsare con- `cealed by this covering. The side plates 9,

before mentioned, are secured to the inner part of each of the long sides of the casing and these plates are provided with convex portions 9 located at intervals along the length of the plate and the said portions on one plate being directly opposite similar portions on the other plate. These portions are provided with openings forming bearings for the bristle carrying members ll which are provided with rods l2 projecting from the members and fitting in these openings. These members are each formed of sheet metal, doubled upon itself` to form a `casing and having the upper end thereof enlarged as at 13 through which passes the rod 12. rlhe body part of this casing is curved as shown in Fig. 6. The bristles 14 are looped over the rod l2 and their free ends project from the casing. rllhe sides of the casing are held together to grip the bristles by the clip l5. lf desired these casings may be formed with a series of enlargements 16, each enlargement to receive a bunch of bristles and tohold each bunch spaced apart from the adjoiningbunches.

The bristle carrying members are c0nnected together by means of a rod 17 which is provided with a plurality of pairs of trunnions, 18, a pair for each member, and each member is provided with a slot 19 in its lower edge and with the recess 20 on each side of the slot to receive the trunnions. rlhus it will be seen that the members may have oscillating movement in the casing and the movement of one member will cause all the other members to move therewith by reason of the fact that they are locked to` gether by the bar 17.

ll provide means for normally holding the bristles in open position, that is, projecting from the casing, and these means consist of a plate 21 engaging a hook 22 on the adjacent member l1 and this plate is pivoted at 28 in the top of the casing, intermediate its ends, and its other end is engaged by a spring button 24 in the top of the easing, this button being similar to the button in the sides of the easing. The plate tends to force the bristles into open position by means ofa spring, not shown, on the pin 24 and engaging the plate. When the bristles are in open position the .plate is in looked engagement With the hook 22 so that thereisno danger of the bristles closing While'the-brush isbeing used, and itis necessaryto push the button 24 to throw the plate l2l out of `e'ingagement With thehooln When desired I may form a pocket 25 on theltop of fthe casing for receiving a comb.

The brush maybe made for the use of the hair, clothes or shoes or for any other purpose kand can be made of different grades of material.

The brush may be made of any suitable materialand of any suitable shape.

It is `thought from the foregoing that the advantagesand novel features of my invention =Will be readilyapparent.

I'desire to be understood that I may make slight changes inthe construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

l. A brush comprising a easing, a plurality of bristle carrying members pivotally secured therein, means for connecting said members together, a hook secured to one of `said members, -a spring pressed plate engaging said hook for normally urging said bristle carrying members in a position to project the'bristles thereof, said plate being in locked engagement with said hook when said bristle carrying members are in an opened position, and means for operating said spring plate to unlock the plate from the hook.

2. A brush comprising a easing, a plurality of bristle carrying members pivoted therein and provided with slots having recessesv upon each side thereof, a rod connecting said members, said rod provided with a plurality of pairs of trunnions for pivotal engagement with the recesses in said bristle carrying members, and means for swinging said bristle carrying members to project or inelose the bristles.

3. A brush comprising a casing having its bottoni pivoted thereto, a plurality of bristle carrying members pivoted in said casing and held in said easing by the bristles thereof engaging With said bottom, means conneeting said members together, one of said members being provided with a hook, and a spring pressed plate engaging with said hook for swinging the bristle carrying members to an open position and locking them in such position when the bottoni of the casing is open, and means for disengaging the plate and hook.
