Description

W. ROEMER. curs FORTRAVELING BAGS. No.177,Z"81. Patented May 9,1876.
, MZMMBA Del/012232:
N4 PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER,-WASHINGTON, D. C. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ROEMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLIPS FOR TRAVELING-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,281, dated May 9, 1876; application file March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern :v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Olasp for Traveling-Bags, 8 60., of
which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail top view of my improved clasp. Fig. 2 is a detail top view of part of a bag-frame, carrying my improved clasp. Fig. 3 is a side view of said frame, showing two of my improved clasps in crosssection.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all .the figures.
This invention relates to 'a novel construction of clasp for closing the jaws of traveling-bags, Satchels, valises, and the like, and has for its'object, first, to prevent the closingarms of the, clasp from binding on the jaws and rubbing off the paint, and also to make a superior clasp in other respects.
The letter A in the drawing represents my improved clasp. It is made with a cylindrical body or shaft, a, and with projecting arms I) b at the ends thereof. Upon the shaft aare formed two projecting pins, d d, which serve as stops for the motions of the clasp. The entire clasp A, with shaft a, arms 12, and double pins d d, is cast in one piece, and otherwise I do not claim the. same. Between the two pins dd the diameter of the shaftais reduced, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, to form shoulders 00, in line with the inner sides of the pins d. The strap B, which fastens the clasp to the jaw G of the bag, is laid over the reduced portion of the shaft a, so that its edges will reach to the pins d and shoulders e, as indicated in Fig. 2. By this means the requisite friction which prevents the clasp from moving too freely under the strap, and from swinging open by the mere jarring of the bag, is obtained by contact of the strap B.
with the shoulders e and pins 0?, or either, and I may therefore leave the arms b I) so far apart that they will clear the faces of the jaws of the bag while the clasp is being swung open or shut. If it were not for this friction produced on the edges of the strap B by the pins d, or shoulders e, or either, the arms b would have to be brought nearer together, so as to bind onthe faces of the jaws and scrape and injure them'whenever the clasp is moved.
I claim as my invention 1. The clasp A, cast in one piece with the projecting arms b b, and with the two projecting pins d 01, substantially as herein shown and described. v
2. The clasp A, cast in one piece, with the projecting pins 01 d, and made with the shoulders e e,andcombined with the strap B,which confines it directly to the jaw O, and fits between the pins or shoulders, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM ROEMER.
