ASA A. STUTSMAN, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
UMBRELLA-HOLDER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application led January 22, 1908. Serial No. 412,184.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Asa A. STUTSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to umbrella holders, and is more particularly adapted for use on dress .suit cases, trunks and the like'and has for its object to provide an umbrella holder which may be conveniently combined with clasps of ordinary construction commonly used for holding the hinged parts of such cases locked.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention. i
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a suit case showing the application of my present invention thereto, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-42 of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4; is a perspective view of the umbrella holding member, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clasp member.
Referring now more particularly t-o the drawings, there is shown asuit case or traveling receptacle 10 of ordinary construction comprising two hinged members l1 and 12 respectively. The member l2 is provided with the usual latch members, 13 and 14 respectively located adjacent each end of the case. Each latch member is ident-ical in construction, and it is thought that a description of one will suflice for both.
The latch member 13 consists of a casing 15 secured upon the member l2 of the case, and located within this casing there is shown an outwardly extending member 16 having its outer end flared upwardly as shownatl?. The inner end of this member is pivoted between the walls of the casing as shown at 18. The member 16 is slotted as shown at 19, and this slotted portion of the member is thus arranged to receive a stud 20 projecting from the member l1, as shown. Pivotally mounted between the walls of the casing 15 adjacent the inner end of the member 16, there is shown a similar' member 21 formed of spring material, and outwardly of the casing this member is bent to form a spring lip 22. Each of the members has a leaf A as shown. These leaves A are carried by the transversely extending portions of the members within the casing. Disposed within the casing, there is shown a leaf spring 23, and this spring has an end portion 24 engaged with the leaf A of the member 2l, and this spring is also provided with an end portion 25 arranged to bear upon the leaf A of the member 16, the central portion of the spring being moved upwardly against the top of the casing 15. The lips 22 of each of the members 13 and 14 respectively are arranged in alinement, and these lips are thus arranged to receive portions of an umbrella A as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and effectively hold the umbrella to the case, as shown. It will of course be understood that canes or similar articles may be held to the grip in substantially the Vsame manner as that described for the umbrella.
IVhat is claimed is:
In a combined fastener and holder for suit cases, the combination with a casing, of a clasp having portions mounted in the side walls of the casing for pivotal movement into and out of operative position, the clasp including a portion extending transversely within the casing, an outwardly directed leaf carried by the transversely extending portion, an umbrella holding member carried by the casing and having portions mounted in the side walls of the casing and arranged for pivotal movement, the umbrella holding member also having a portion extending transversely within the casing, a leaf carried by the transversely extending portion of the umbrella holding member, and a spring disposed within the casing with its end portions upon the leaves of the two members, said spring having its central portion bowed upwardly and bearing against the inner face In testimony whereof I alX my slgnatlnfe5 Y of the top 0i' the easlng, salcl Sprlng belng 1n presence of two Wltnesses. consu-noted for exertion of its energy against rp T l upward movement of lts end port-lons Where- ASA A' S*UTSL XB by the Clasp and the umbrella holdlng mem- Vi/Htnesses: bor are nex'n'mlly held 1n an operatwe pol- FRANK MATHER,
