Description

UNITED STATES ATET OEEIcE.
ELI S. BARTRAM, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAILORS CHALK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,886, dated September 4,1877; application led July 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI S. BARTRAM, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new. and valuable Improvement in Tailors Chalk-Holders 5 and l do hereby declare that the folloWin g isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my chalk-holder. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the saine.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangment of a holder for holding the kind of chalk used by tailors, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. p
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
This chalk-holder consists of a wedge-shaped block, A, of wood, metal, or other suitable material, with a slightly tapering opening through it of sufficient size for the passage of the piece of chalk B. The chalk is inserted at the larger or rear end ot' the holder, and projects through the smaller end thereof. This end of the holder is beveled on both sides, so as to run down on an incline to the end of the chalk, whereby the chalk sharpens itselt' by use, it filling the opening at that end of the holder, and forms, as it were, a continuation ofthe beveled edges, running, therefore, to a sharp edge.
To each end of the holder A, at or near the larger end, is attached aspring, C, which extends forward, and has its free end bent inward, forming'a hook, a, which enters a slot, b, in the end of the holder near the front end, and engages with the edge of the chalk B, holding the same in place in the holder.
On each end of the holder is aprojection, d, against which the spring C rests. By pressing on the springs back ot' these projections d d, the hooks c a. are sufficiently drawn ont to allow the chalk to be moved out or in, as desired.
By the use of this invention a considerable saving is effected, as the chalk may be used till but very little is left. There is no waste in sharpening the chalk, as it becomes virtually self-sharpening, and there is no liability of the chalk becoming broken.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
The wedge-shaped holder A, having beveled sides at the front end, projections d d, and slots b b, as described, and provided with the springs O C, forming hooks or catches a a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELI S. BARTRAM.
