UNITED STATES HARRY U. KISTNER, OF BORDENTOWVN, NEW JERSEY.
SClSSORS-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,689, dated October 18, 1887.
Application filed April 6, 1887. Serial No. 233,857.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY U. KISTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bordentown, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors-Sharpeners, which improvement is fully set forth in the followiug specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a scissors-sharpener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section in line :0 a}, Fig. 4. Fig. i represents a top or plan view, parts of the sharpener being removed. Fig. 5 represents a section ofa portion in line 3 y, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate c0rrcsponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a scissors-sharpener of novel construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
It also consists in constructing the body of the sharpener with a needle or pin case.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the device, the same being formed of a block or piece of metal, wood, or other suit able substance.
B represents a slide having at its inner end a gage, C, and between its ends a slot, D. Passing through the slot D is' a.sct screw, E, which enters the body A and serves to adjust the gage G and hold the same firmly in position on said body.
The end. of the body opposite to the slide B is recessed to receive the retainer F for the sharpener G, said retainer being pivoted to the body and formed of a hook, H, and tongue J, the hook being on the outside of the body and the tongue within the recess of the body.
The sharpener G consists of a tile or plate of steel or other hard metal having a serrated or roughened face, and it is inserted under the hook H and against the tongue J. The gage C bears against the sharpener at the end' opposite to the hook H, and as the screw E holds the slide, and, consequently, said gage securely in position, it is evident that the sharpener is firmly clamped to the body A. It will be seen that the gage occupies an inclined position, whereby, when the blade of a pair of scissors is placed against it, its edge is properly presented to the sharpener,as will be seen in Fig. l.
The scissors as supported and disposed are (No model.)
now moved or worked in opposite directions, the effect of which is the sharpening of the blade in a rapid, true, and reliable manner. It is evident that by reversing the scissors the other blade may be applied to the gage and sharpened.
In order to prevent lateral motion of the gage, the side of the body A has a flange, K, which embraces the contiguous portion of the, slide B, thus assisting to keep the latter in position and guide the same in its motions.
In order to move the sharpener G, the screw E is properly rotated and the slide and gage then drawn back. The retainer H may now be swung out on its pivot or axis, and, as it carries the plate G with it, the latter may be readily grasped and displaced.
In the face of the body A is a depression or recess, L, which is covered by a plate or lid, M, and again covered by the slide B, said recess forming a chamber and constituting a needle or pin case, the same being accessible by removing the slide B.
\Vhen the slide is in position, it covers the lid M, preventing loss of the needles, pins, or other contents of the chamber.
As the gage is adj ustably held in position, it may be moved over the file or sharpener, so that when the latter is worn or become smooth at the place of sharpening the gage may be located adjacent to a fresh part of the sharpener.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A scissors sharpener consisting of the body A, the adjustable slide 13 with gage O, the sharpening-plate G, and the pivoted retainer F, all of said parts combined substantially as described.
2. A scissors sharpener having a sharpening-plate and a retainer therefor, said retainer being pivoted to the body of the device, and consisting of a hook, H, and tongue J, allsubstantially as described.
3. A combined scissorssharpener and pincase consisting of the body A with chamber L. the slide B with gage 0, means, substantially as described, for securing said slide in position, the sharpener G,and the pivoted retainer F, all of said parts being combined substantially as described.
Witnesses: HARRY U. KISTNER.
