Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT onirica.
ISAAC BABBITT, 0F ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
Hons.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,5254,` dated May 23, 1854.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC BABBITT, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Hones for Sharpening Razors; and I` hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, `and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved hone. Fig. 2 a section through the same. Figs. 3 and 4, will be referred to hereafter and will be made use of to illustrate myinvention.
It is known that the edge of a razor which has been recently ground upon a cutlers wheel is superior to that which itcan ever possess after being set upon a fiat hone, this is owing to the extreme thinness which is given to its edgeby the hollowing of the sides of the blade as seen in Fig. 3 which is a section through the blade of a razor. To imitate the operation produced upon the blade by a cutlers wheel, razor straps have been made curved in o-ne direction, as represented inFig. 4. This device may be made to answer a very good purpose in a razor straps, but will never answer for a hone, as in unskilful hands, or without the extremest care the edge of the blade, would be destroyed upon the edges a a.
To avoid this inconvenience andat the same time to produce a hone, which shall keep the tedge of the razor always thin, without at any time injuring it even though it be used ever so carelessly or.in ever so unskilful hands is the object of my present invention, which consists in making my hone of a portion of the surface of a sphere as represented in Figs. l and 2, upon which it material which yI prefer to make use of is sheet tin, the disks. being struck into a convex form bydies. The convex surface thus formed is suitably attached to a handle c, which is made hollow to accommodate a reoeptacle for the paste or grit to be used with the hone. Thismay be ground emery or any other suitable cutting substance. As this however forms no part of my present invention, it is merely referred to at the present time. j
Operation: A portion of the paste or of any suitable cutting substance is spread upon the convex surface of the hone, with sulicient oil to enable it to work freely and the razor is then honed thereon. It is evident that as before stated, however carelessly the hone may be used there can be no danger of injury to the razor while at the same time the thin edge and concave blade isobtained, heretofore only attainable by the use of the cutlers wheel.
I do not claim making razor straps curved in one direction, or of portions of the surface of a cylinder as this has been done before. Neither do I claim the use of metal of any description as a material for making hones. But j That I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Making the grinding surface of hones for sharpening razors convex, or of portions of the surface of a sphere in the manner and for the purpose described.
ISAAC BABBITT.
