Description

H. P. BROUKS.
SCISSORS SHARPENER.
N0.18.5,Z86. Patented Dec. 12, 1876.
THE GRAPH IC OO.N4
Harr es graces HEMAN P. BROOKS, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 185,286, dated December 12, 1876 application filed April 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEMAN P. BROOKS, of aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Scissors-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification:
My object is to make a cheap, simple, and efficient scissors sharpener, which will be readily understood and easily used by any person. v
My invention consists of an upper and lower plate of cast metal, and of peculiar shape, held together by means of a loop, which is cast on the top of the lower plate, and passed through a hole in the upper plate, and pro jecting far enough through the upper plate to receive a wedge or taper pin, which is driven through the loop, to hold the parts together. A recess is made longitudinally between the two plates, to receive a file, which is griped and held between the two. The upper plate is provided with lips or projections, which stand at an angle to the lower plate. These lips are for guides, against which the scissors are to be held while the edge is being drawn across the file, and stand at such an angle as to give the proper bevel to the edge of the scissors. I show two of these lips, but the device could be constructed with but one.
To use my scissors-sharpener, hold with the left hand the instrument firmly upon the table, and, with the scissors in the right hand, place the face of the blade against the lip, letting the edge rest against the file, and draw the blade across the file a sufficient number of times to give them the required sharpness.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved scissors-sharpener, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
A is the loop., 13 is the lips or guides. C is the wedge or taper pin that holds the parts together. 1) and l) are projecting points cast on the lower side of the upper plate, and pass down by the edges of the lower plate, to steady the parts, and to keep them in a correspondingly horizontal position. E is the file. F and F are feet, upon which the implement rests. G is the opening between the prongs of the loop, to leave room for the file to pass, and is cut entirely through the lower plate, to facilitate the work of molding and casting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The upper and lower plates, with the file E between them, and the parts held together by means of the loop A and wedge or pin C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HEMAN P. BROOKS.
