Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN WEST, OF BRAINEB-D, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD'CUTTERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,561, dated January 20, 1874 application filed June 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN WEST, of Brainerd, in the county of Grow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutters for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig 2 is a side view.
This invention has relation to thread-cutters for sewing-machines; .and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the adjustable blade, blade-holder or casing, and adjustable arm, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a metallic arm, designed to be attached to the cloth-plate or other suitable part of a sewingmachine bymeans of a screw or -pivot through its rear end, allowing it to be shifted into and out of the required position for use. The arm is made elastic, and is slightly bent or curved, as shown in the drawing, so that when attached to a sewing-machine, it will exert sufiicient pressure to retain the knife-holder in proper position. The forward end of said arm is slotted lengthwise, and is made tapering and beveled at the sides. B designates the blade-holder, consisting of a thin plate of metal, having a central ridge, b, formed by compressing the met-al, and short converging side flanges'b. The knife C is held between the sides of the flange b, being inserted at the rear end of the knife-holder. The cuttingedge of the blade projects into a slot, d, of the flange b, where the thread to be leut is received. The edge of the flange b is curved or inclined, as shown, so that the thread may be readily passed over into the slot d. The bladethe forward end of the latter between theV ilanges b, and pressing the holder tightly into place. The slot in the end of the arm receives the rear end of the flange b. Upon the under surface of the blade-holder is secured a piece of cloth, a, or other suitable material, to protect the cloth-plate of the sewing-machine from being scratched by the movement of the thread-cutter. The knife or blade has a shoulder at its rear end, as shown at e, which lies against the end of the slot in the arm, thus preventing the knife from being pushed out accidentally.
When it is required to sharpen the blade, the holder is to be removed from the arm, to allow the blade to be taken out.
The arm A may be a permanent attachment of the machine, and used for holding various devices.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the knife-holder B, knife (l, and elast-ic arm A, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the arm A, of the removable knife-holder B, having the lateral flanges b', including the end of said arm, and provided with the knife C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The'combination of the knife-holder B, having the central ridge b of the arm A, having its forward end slotted, as shown and described. i
4. rI he combination of the shouldered blade C, blade-holder B, and slotted arm A, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of May, 1878.
JOHN WEST.
Witnesses N. HENDEY, L. D. HENDEY.
